Five of the Oddest Requests Made by PETA

Bridget Ilene Delaney
PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, claims to be a great organization. They claim to want animals treated ethically. However, they say that it is horrible for people to own pets, even if the pets have wonderful lives where they are well-fed and happy. Horrible stories about PETA can be found on the Internet. All that has to be done to start is search (without quotes around the whole phrase), "PETA walk in freezer." However, the one thing PETA is good at doing is getting publicity. They file so many requests that are outlandish so PETA is always making the news. Here are some of the oddest requests.

The What Days of Summer?

We often call the really hot days in the summertime "the dog days of summer." This is because of the star Sirius. Sirius is located in the constellation Canus Major. Due to the location of Sirius in the constellation Canus Major, it has been given the nickname "the dog star." PETA says that calling Canus Major "the dog star" is degrading to dogs. However, logic says dogs don't care what things are called "dog" as long as they are loved.

Band, Rename Thyself!

PETA wants a European band to rename itself. That band is The Pet Shop Boys. PETA contacted the band. It said that the name of the band should be changed to "The Rescue Shelter Boys." PETA said that this would help promote rescue shelters instead of pet shops. The band denied PETA's request.

No Gender Neutrality!

It has been known that some translations of the Bible are being updated to make the text gender neutral for humans. However, PETA wants something different for the animals. They say that every animal should be given a gender. However, experts in the Hebrew language explain that it doesn't work because every noun in Hebrew is given a gender, so all ants may be female and another animal may always be male. Knowing the gender of the animal does not add anything to the Biblical stories, so there is no need to assign them genders.

UGA Must Build a Dogbot!

The University of Georgia's mascot is a bulldog named Uga. Uga the Sixth and the seventh both passed away from a congenital heart condition common in bulldogs. The request after Uga the sixth passed made sense since all PETA said was that the next mascot should be adopted from a shelter and not bought. However, after Uga the Seventh passed, PETA insisted that the University of Georgia build a robotic mascot and not get another bulldog. It said they could have a person dress as a mascot, but if a dog was wanted, it had to be animatronic.

Eating Fish is Like Eating Dogs

PETA sent a request to an aquarium southwest of Los Angeles. The complaint was that the restaurant in the aquarium was serving fish. PETA said that "serving fish at an aquarium is like serving poodle burgers at dog show."

Oh I have to laugh. PETA does some great things, such as lobbying against puppy mills and shutting down that horrible pig farm about a year ago. But they are so out of touch with animals and their place in the world that it negates all the seriously good work they do. They claim to be advocates for animals, and yet don't look at the world from the animal's point of veiw, but from their own human point of view. This was entertaining, thanks!
