At the Movies
People pay good money to enjoy the movie, not listen to your conversation. Set the ringer to vibrate before the movie starts, just in case. If you must make/take a call, head for the lobby and let everybody watch the show in peace.
In the Checkout Line at the Supermarket
No, it is not the checker's job to wait until you finish your conversation and are ready to pay for your groceries. That's why so many stores now have those cute little signs telling patrons to finish calls before arriving at the register. It's also not a good thing to make the people in line behind you wait.
At the Dinner Table
Home or in a restaurant, it doesn't matter. Your attention should be on the food and your dinner companion(s) - no exceptions. If they aren't entertaining enough to merit delaying a phone conversation, why are you with them in the first place?
In Church
Really? It never occurred to you that making lunch plans while Communion is being served is a bad thing? Well, it is, so don't do it.
Behind the Wheel
It's one thing to put your own life at risk as you sail through stop signs or fail to heed red lights; it's another thing to endanger everyone else on the road. This sort of thing is all the worse if you have children in the car. Either get a hands-free unit or pull into a parking lot and make/take the call.
Remember two simple rules. First, you don't have to answer a call every time one comes in; that's what voice mail is for. Second, it really is possible to go longer than ten minutes without engaging in a phone conversation. Give it a try, you might find it liberating.
