Five Places to Cut the Family Budget During This Recession

Aaron Smith
As 2008 winds down and 2009 gets ready to begin, the economic picture couldn't look much worse than it does right now. Economists and strategists all believe that our economy is in a severe recession and there is even the fear that a depression is a possibility. Jobs are being lost each and every day and more families are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet when it comes to the family budget. Many people have begun to look at ways to cut back on expenditures and save some money since the future of our economy and everyone's personal finances is very uncertain. I have put together a list of five places that the typical family can cut back on and save some of that hard earned dough.

Five places to cut back on the family budget expenditures

1. Utility Bills- Things such as water bills, heating bills, or electric bills are absolutely necessary, but many times there are things that can be done to cut back on the amount you are spending each month on these things. Simple things such as turning the thermostat down at night in the winter and simply snuggling up under several warm blankets can save quite a bit of money. Don't use any more loads of laundry than is necessary, since it saves energy to just combine some of the loads.

2. Cell Phone bills- Many families can find some ways to get by with a cheaper cell phone plan than the one they currently have. Utilize all the cell phone offers that are out there now in the bad economy and don't waste any minutes. Go with the bare minimum that you can get by with and make it work.

3. Gas station- Yes the price of gasoline has fallen a long ways, but you can still save money by doing things like car pooling or simply cutting back on the amount of driving you do. Try to make as many stops as possible while you are out rather than going back out on separate occasions.

4. Grocery bills- Hear me out on this one, I'm not suggesting you stop going to the grocery. It is definitely a necessity. I'm suggesting you start doing things like using coupons to save money and buying in bulk when things are on sale.

5. Cable television- Many of the cable television providers are now offering digital service packs where you can have the Internet/television/phone service for under $100 a month. These can certainly save quite a bit of money over the long run and they may help you be able to get a cheaper cell phone plan because the phone service includes free long distance statewide.

There are a number of ways that families can but back and save some extra dollars. These may not seem easy at first, but there are worth it. Make your money work for you!
