Five Random Things About Me

Inspired by Bailey Black's Post

1) I can say the alphabet backwards really fast. REALLY fast. About as fast as I can say it forwards. Once I was on a long car trip with my nephews, when they were little. I thought it would amuse them if I could do this, so I practiced in my head for a while, then spewed it out. It amuses kids, mostly about age 7.

2) I can juggle. Neener neener. Even though I have no hand eye coordination, I can juggle. I can't hit a baseball, I stink at tennis, if I have to run, I invoke giggles, but I can juggle. Not that I am great at it, but I can juggle 3 or 4 balls, or 3 clubs, and I can do a few tricks like Mills Mess. Actually, juggling is a lot easier than it looks. I worked at a camp for kids with various difficulties, and I taught a lot of them to juggle. If you can toss a ball from one hand to the other, you can learn to juggle.

3) I'm afraid of dogs. I'm not sure why, but I am afraid of dogs. My mom told me that when I was about 3, we visited some people who had a German shepherd, and the dog barked at me a lot. Maybe that's it. I dunno. I'm a lot better than I used to be, but I am still not a dog fan.

4) I was asked not to return to pre-school. Yup. I have the old report cards. Mid-term, my parents were told that "Peter remains a challenge to his teachers". Then I wasn't invited back for the next year. I've written about my learning disabilities elsewhere on Associated Content. Since that time, I attended a special education school that my mom started, and went on to mainstream schools, and then to college and grad school.

5) I lived in Israel for 3 years. I went first as a tourist, really liked it, and decided to move there for a while. I almost wound up staying there forever, but I moved back for a lot of little reasons. I'll never speak Hebrew the way I speak English; I got to the point where I could get by, but I could tell I would never be really fluent. My family is here. I know our culture and history better than I will ever know Israel's. Other reasons too. But I really liked some aspects of living there. There's more emphasis on family, there's less income inequality, there's less crime, and so on. But the little things drew me back to New York.

Peter - I'm afraid of dogs. Seriously. Two different bull dogs bit me when I was a child. I'm most afraid of bull dogs. I liked reading about things you can do. I laughed at your being a challenge to your teachers. Mine called me too "curious" because I wanted to know all about everything. Take care.
