Five Real Life Math Projects for Homeschoolers

Mrs. Renee

Making math come alive for your homeschooler can really prove to be beneficial for them. Often you hear kids ask the question, of when they will have to use something. Well if you take away the workbooks and show them how and when they will be using their math skills as they get older, it will be easier for them to understand. Below you will find five real life math projects that will helps students of any grade.

Supermarket couponing

With the latest craze in couponing, you can teach your children about budgeting, and shopping, while helping your family. It is a great way to combine daily tasks. Even younger children can work on basic addition and subtracting skills, by helping out with the grocery list. Couponing can be a weekly project that the entire family works on together. Kids often get bored with the worksheets and workbooks, and this is a great way to show them something different. In public schools they usually have artificial supermarkets to help kids learn about budgeting. However as a homeschooler you have a unique opportunity to teach your child the real thing.

Invest in artificial stock

One project that older kids often enjoy is investing in artificial stock. You can check the local newspaper and pick a stock. Then you can give your children artificial money to invest. This can be a project that last's an entire month. You can even incorporate charts and graphs into this lesson as well. There is so much that you can cover in this one project to really help your children learn the skills they will need in their life.

Building and growing Projects

One thing that I found kids love is building small projects. You can have kids draw out their plans for their own home, or if they are into sports their own stadium. You can have them build a small model of what they draw. This is a good way to work on math skills that they will need if they choose to go into construction. Of course they will be building things on a much larger scale, but there is nothing wrong with starting small. Kids will love the projects and may not even realize they are using those math skills. A project can also include designing a garden during the summer months.

Charting the weather

A weather project can also be a lot of fun for your homeschoolers. Each morning they can graph the weather for the week. Charts are great when charting the weather, and will help kids learn to put graphs to good use. This is really a great project for young children learning basic math skills.

Plan a dream vacation

If there is a dream vacation location that your kids would like to visit, why not have them plan out a dream vacation. This is a great way to put key math skills to use. They can create a budget, and plan for meals and places to stay. This is a great way to show them how to apply the skills that they have already learned in math.
