Five Reasons to Bake Your Own Bread

1. There are no mystery ingredients in the bread.
Read the ingredients on a store bought bag of bread and some likely culprits will be: high fructose corn syrup; guar gum; sodium stearoyl lactylate; ethoxylated mono and diglycerides; thiamin hydrochloride; monocalcium phosphate. My eyes glaze over. I would have to look up most of these ingredients to have a clue what they are. My spell checker even refuses to recognize many of them as legitimate words.

My favorite ingredient listed on a bag of regular sandwich bread is "yeast food (ammonium sulfate)." Yeast food? Is this what a person would feed to yeast? Just a little attempt at bread humor. But I digress.

In my homemade bread recipe, I use simple ingredients. My favorite recipe calls for only water, sugar, yeast, salt, oil, and flour. Sometimes I add dried rosemary from my herb garden.

2. Fresh baked bread smells wonderful.
When I was a child, one of my favorite smells came from the downtown bread bakery. My mother and I would drive by in the morning on the way to the bank, and the scent of fresh baking bread would fill the car.

Fresh baked bread is the ultimate comfort food. Everyone has her favorite type of bread. Each unique bread scent evokes powerful memories. Think of banana nut bread being baked in the warmth of your home during the holidays.

3. Kneading the dough is therapeutic.
What could be more simple and wonderful than kneading made-from-scratch bread dough? There is the silky feel of the flour on one's hands and the rhythmic motion of kneading the flour into the dough mixture. I am convinced that kneading bread dough counts for daily meditation time.

4. Homemade bread tastes much better than store bought bread.
Eating my first slice of made-from-scratch, homemade bread was absolute heaven. I realized how little flavor the store bought bread has.

5. Creating tasty bread from simple ingredients is empowering.
It is thrilling to be able to serve bread you made from scratch to loved ones. People are often amazed that I know how to make from scratch and bake my own bread in the regular old oven - no costly bread machine to clutter my kitchen.

A friend says that when she makes her own bread from scratch, she feels like she is performing an act of magic. It is amazing to see such simple ingredients come together to become a wonderful loaf of bread.

Have not made my own in years. Think my kneading days are over, but my niece's bread machine bread smelled and tasted just as good as the old fashion kind.

I don't have much patience for kneading the dough! So that's why I love the bread maker so much! ;-) What kind of bread do elves make their sandwiches with? Shortbread! Dave

I love the taste of homemade bread. It was always such a treat whenever my mum made bread, especially pita and katimeri.
