Five Reasons Every Grandparent Should Be on Facebook
Why should every grandparent be on Facebook? Well, the short answer is, that's where your grand-kids are. Of course, there's much more to it than that. I'm on Facebook every day. It's not just about the grand-kids. Only one of mine is on there. The rest are too young. Still, here are the top five reasons every grandparent should have a Facebook page IMHO.
1. Keeping in touch is number one. I started using Facebook to network with writers and promote my work. To my surprise, some long lost friends and family members found and friended me too. I even got in touch with some high school classmates. Some I never even hung out with in high school. Too bad, because now I've learned they're pretty awesome people. Now that I'm a grandparent, those high school cliques are history in more ways than one.
2. Young people communicate in text abbreviations. Grandparents with Facebook pages not only understand them, they use them on a daily basis. Who thought you could learn a whole new language in your golden years? It's not French. It's not Espanol. It's, well, I'm not sure what they call it, but thanks to facebook, I can speak it fluently.
3. Facbook games keep your brain sharp. Sure, crossword puzzles are awesome.. If you have the math skills for Sudoku, more power to you. Me, I like Facebook puzzle and brain games. They're fast, they're simple, they involve split second decisions and what's best of all? I can do them in between articles without searching the house for my puzzle book.
4. Facebook keeps grandparents current. I have friends of all ages on Facebook. So not only do I keep up with the lingo, I keep up with politics, news and all sorts of current events. After all, every grandparent must know who their tweens idol is and what sort of clothes kids want for their birthday this year. I wish my grandparents were on Facebook back in the day. Perhaps I wouldn't have gotten that Frank Sinatra album. Maybe I would have gotten Aerosmith instead.
5. Facebook encourages grandparents to be social. You know how it is. Once you start getting older, you're just not all that interested in what other people have to say. Oh, come on, you know it's true. You formed your opinions long ago. Probably tired of talking about it too. Just remember, being social really is good for you. It keeps you young. Plus, you might just teach those young whipper-snappers a thing or two about life. Even if you're not into that type of thing, give it a shot. Every grandparent should be on Facebook. Even if they don't think it's for them.

Post a CommentThe greatest benefit to grandparents having a Facebook page that I have personally experienced is unfortunately rather morbid. All of my grandparents have long since passed--three of them spent their last several years fighting Alzheimer's. However, various family members have cobbled together Facebook pages for them--filled with digitized photo albums, random notes scribbled on cards and letters, and various scraps of their poetry and writing. As well as sharing personal stories and funny anecdotes as they spring to memory. It is particularly beneficial for the great grandchildren who didn't have much first-hand experience with them while they were alive. It's much more personable than a tombstone. A few of the kids in the family have even referenced the pages for school reports. A sort of living family history. I hesitated about the idea at first, but have come to embrace it. It's nice to remember them as they were. Not how they went.
