Five Reasons to Go See "Dreamgirls"

I am one of millions who crowded theatres on Christmas Day to see the anticipated blockbuster smash, "Dreamgirls." Typically, I ignore critics and advertisers who use phrases like "blockbuster smash." But in my craving for some uplifting movie-watching material, and a break from the horror that I tend to enjoy, I nestled into one of the cushy seats at my local theatre and settled in for the treat that so many have been ranting about. Upon having seen this incredibly popular film, I have come to the realization that everyone should see this film. And here are a few reasons why:

1...THE WARDROBE - It's a fact that Sharen Davis knew exactly what she was doing as costume designer for this production. The costumes exemplify all the marvelous show stopping energy of the 60's and 70's. Audience members will be thrilled with seeing Beyonce and her cohorts float on and off stage in the shiny, slinky numbers Davis has whipped up for them. Aside from that, Davis successully captured the transition between 60's mod and 70's funk in her costuming. The shift was made with relative ease in this musical-movie.

2...HEAR EDDIE "SANG" - Yes, Eddie Murphy really did his own singing. After the travesty that was his 1980's embarrassment, "Party all the Time", I knew that I would have to hear the man for myself in order to keep from giggling hysterically. Ironically, Mr. Murphy pulled out all the stops as James "Thunder" Early, a soul singer very reminiscent of the late, James Brown. Furthermore, his chops in the movie lent the role the kind of authenticity that makes "Dreamgirls" more than just a musical made for the big screen.

3...IT'S A FEEL GOOD FILM. - This is the type of film that was made for Christmas Day. But the energy of this movie is powerful enough to carry it right into the New Year. The story, which is loosely based on the story of 60's Motown group, the Supremes, contains all the emotion of a love story, the glitz of Broadway, and a plot that can be carried over into so many movies about the entertainment industry. This is a film with a message that doesn't bombard the audience in a contrived way.

4...IT'S ONE OF THE BEST CROSSOVER FILMS---EVER. - This movie, is perhaps one of the best crossover films ever to make it to the big screen. It's common knowledge that movies containing mostly black actors and actresses, are usually more widely received by African American audiences. But in looking around the theatre, I noticed faces of every shade-with no divisive split amongst races. "Dreamgirls" is the type of film that entertains without pretense. It does so, even while highlighting some of the entertainment industry's uglier aspects (racial discrimination during the Civil Rights movement amongst others). These key points are not shoved down audience's throats. But viewers can appreciate the context under which these actors are showcasing their authentic skills.

5...JENNIFER HUDSON- Undoubtedly, this former American Idol contestant is the reason for "Dreamgirls'" ultimate opening weekend success. Her stand-out performance has been tagged as Oscar-worthy. And if the teary eyes in the theatre are any indication of her name being stamped on one of those Golden Statues, then she's a definite shoo-in for a win. Simply put, her voice is rich and whole without being overdone. She breathes life into the iconic song, "...And I Am Telling You...", with such feeling, that one would think the role of Effie White was created specifically for her. Fox-TV audiences may have voted Jennifer out as a potential American Idol. But it's obvious from her dynamic performance, that the role of a Dreamgirl was the platform needed to showcase her enviable talents.

Those who aren't necessarily into musicals, or even musicals brought to the big screen will more than likely find "Dreamgirls" an incredibly engrossing film to watch. With so many top names in Hollywood such as Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, and Beyonce, it's no wonder that this film has been cited as the third highest grossing film opening ever.
