For some parents just sitting down and organizing the daily homeschool schedule is difficult enough. However being able to sit down and know where everything is when you need it can be even more difficult. After homeschooling for several years, I have found that nothing works better than an inventory checklist for your homeschool. Below you will find several reasons, why I, and many other homeschoolers in my area find this to be beneficial.
Find it when you need it
Of course the first and probably the most obvious benefit is that you will be able to find items when you need it. There is nothing more distracting to the school day, than kids wandering around looking for a pencil sharpener, or a box of crayons. If you take the time to label each of your boxes, and put like items into the same boxes you are sure to find everything you need with ease. If you have an inventory checklist, all you have to do is check the list to see where your items are located.
Prevents overspending
Have you ever made a trip to the store to purchase some new items only to find out that you already have plenty of these items at home already? If you don't take the time to neatly arrange, and organize your homeschool items this is exactly what may end up happening. Since most homeschooling families are on very strict budgets it really only makes sense to arrange your supplies so you know how much you have left of each item. This way you are only buying items as you need them, and not because you can not find them.
Makes the day more enjoyable
After speaking with several other homeschoolers on this topic, I found that many of them agreed it just makes the day a lot more enjoyable. The kids are less stressed out because their school day ends a lot earlier, and parent doing the teaching is also less stressed. Organization really does make the entire day run so much smoother. Having an inventory checklist will help with this process.
Helps when you are sick
There are bound to be days, when you are just too sick to get up and look for that extra box of crayons. If you have an inventory checklist readily available you can have you kids look at the list and locate the items. This means that when you are creating your inventory checklist it is important that you take the time to not only list the items that you have, but also to label and number each of the boxes. Then you can put the corresponding number on the boxes. Some even use a color coded system. If you need someone else to fill in while you are sick they will also be able to find the items needed to complete the assignments with no problem.
Keeps the house neat
Of course this is one of my favorite reasons for creating an inventory list. If kids do not know where an item goes them will more than likely just end up putting it anywhere? In order to keep all of your school items from ending up all over the house, having a spot for everything helps. If you hang up the inventory list near the location where you have the items stored, kids will easily be able to put items back from where they got them.
