Five Reasons to Love Jon & Kate Plus 8 on TLC

Susan Braun
I'm hooked on watching families with many children. First, it was the famous Duggar family and their occasional TV specials (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/336278/the_duggar_family_of_arkansas_has_17.html).

Now, a new family comes along and to my delight, they are on TV weekly! Meet the Gosselins: Jon, Kate, their seven-year-old twins Cara and Mady, and their three-year-old sextuplets, Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah & Joel.

First, a little background: The Gosselins live in southeastern Pennsylvania, and conceived all their children with the help of IVF. "Jon & Kate Plus 8" is a candid look at their lives, covering everything from the mundane like visits to the dentist to the thrilling like cross-country drives to Florida. With twins and septuplets, even the dull events become energized.

Reasons I will not miss my Monday night TV dates with the Gosselins:

1. Jon and Kate's relationship is REAL. By that I mean, they obviously are devoted to each other, but they're not sickening sweet. We actually see them arguing and working things out. I think that their relationship works well considering the obvious amount of stress they would be under with 8 young children. And I appreciate that they are not sugar-coating things so that we think they are always happy with each other.

2. Kate has her act together! She is my new hero. I really admire the way, even with 8 kids, she keeps her house neat, buys healthy food and cooks healthy meals, and keeps the kids all dressed cute and as germ-free as possible (she's a former nurse). She amazes me with her organization, and helps me feel that if she can do it, I can too.

3. Jon and Kate treat the children as individuals and not just as a herd - which I think would be easy to do, with 6 exactly the same age. They frequently point out personality traits of the various kids and never seem to lump them all together. I would imagine multiples would long for their own identities, and Jon and Kate seem to do a great job in encouraging individuality.

4. Jon's laid-back style is a great complement to Kate's more type-A personality. For instance, on a recent episode where the family visited Disney World, Kate had a meltdown (no pun intended) when the kids spilled ice cream down the front of their clothes. Jon, on the other hand, said that he thought the moment was really enjoyable for the kids and something they would always remember. I think that Jon and Kate's diverse styles balance each other out well so that the kids will grow up with a healthy balance.

5. This is a true REALITY show. We hear frequent bouts of multiple children crying, having dirty diapers, having full-out tantrums, etc. At other moments, we see them adorably dressed and walking neatly in line, all holding onto their rope. I like that we see many parts of their lives - the good AND the bad. This is reality TV at its best!

Pull out the TV Guide and look for Jon & Kate Plus 8 on TLC or Discovery Health. You know I love the show -what do you think?

Kate is very over bearing and Jon is not. From the beginning I seen it in her. I really could care less about Jon and Kate its the kids that cercern me. I don't understand why they don't stop this filming and be a normal family. The kids now nothing but being filmed. And as they get older kids at school will pick on them and it will be all Kate and Jon fault.more so Kate because she seem to have the last word. And what people need to understand Jon just didn't rush out and get a girl friend.Him and Kate were having problem long before we new. But there rating ment more. What a shame

I also agree with Josh. What are you people thinking that its ok to treat someone like Kate does. Thats just crazy!!! How many times on the show was Jon trying to enjoy time with his kids, like carving pumpkins and shes all frantic with him saying "Jon lets get this mess cleaned up now" etc. That is not a mother who is spending quality time with her kids, that is someone who is putting a show on for the audience!!

I agree with Josh. She's very overbearing. It's a wonder he's not drunk every minute of the day to escape her rantings.

I was interested in watching the show until I saw her griping at him for not using a coupon. What a lunatic! I liked the bit on The Soup about that episode.

women who like kate should eat a chicken bone and choke. b/c we hate listening to you and deal with your insecurities by controlling us and making our life hell.

Perhaps your mother didn't trust herself around the opposite sex. Some are secure in the marriage or relationship to have friends of the opposite sex. Jon is an adult. He can go out and have a beer if he wants. He can take pictures with fans. When Kate is away, she can have a beer too or a glass of wine. Heck, if they want they can have wine/alcohol in their home if they choose. :-)

My mother said it best. Women don't need guy "friends" once they are married and men don't need female "friends".
If you want to go out as a couple with other couples - that is acceptable anything other than that can create the wrong perception. No one KNOWS if Jon cheated but as far as most are concerned his lack of common sense in this department is almost as big as mistake as actually being caught in bed with another woman. I can't imagine Jon doesn't know how great a woman he has. She is pretty, neat, organized and has managed to turn a very difficult situation SEXTUPLETS on top of TWINS into a positive situation in such a way as to keep the children well cared for and happy and still tries to be there for her husband. I mean - they are moving into a 1.3 million dollar house as a direct result of her managing this situation. As to her being a b**ch - she is under just as much (if not more) pressure then Jon and is trying to cope. I mean she's a neat freak with 8 children - most wo

Um..Kate has said over and over that if wasn't for the show they would not be able to experience all they have experienced. She was clear about that when they took the Disney trip. Oh Josh, I think you're upset that she has more balls then you could dream up. LOL.

JOSH IF YOU KNEW WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO HAVE THAT MANY KIDS YOU WOULD BE THAT WAY TO. KATES NOT A B.......SHE JUST MAKES SHURE HER KIDS ARE TAKEN CARE OF AND APERENTLY JOHN LOVES HER HE IS WHAT YOU CALL A REAL MAN.
