Five Reasons to Use Pantyhose Headbands

Serfronya Wallace
Pantyhose headbands are one of my favorite hair accessories for my natural hair. I actually consider them a necessity. I wear one several times a week depending on my hairstyle for the day. There are several reasons why I use nylon headbands.

1. Nylon bands are inexpensive to make.
If you wear pantyhose then you can just use the ones that get holes in them. If you're not a pantyhose wearer then you can you can buy an inexpensive pair from the dollar store. You can easily get 4 headbands out of one pair of nylons, if not more.

2. They blend in.
I use black pantyhose since that's the color of my hair. The headbands blend right in. I even had someone tell me one time that my hairband was cute! I just smiled and said thank you.

3. Nylon headbands provide lots of stretch.
The main reason why I use pantyhose to make headbands is because they are extremely stretchy. My natural hair is very thick so most store bought hairbands don't stretch wide enough to accommodate all of my hair. But that isn't an issue with a nylon hairband.

4. The bands don't pull your hair.
Rubber bands tend to pull out hair when you remove them. Goody style bands aren't as bad as rubber bands but they can still pull hair, especially if they are the ones that are joined with metal. But nylon is gentle on the hair and does not tug at all.

5. Pantyhose hairbands are versatile.
I have made several nylon bands in various sizes. I have smaller ones to use for ponytails or buns. Sometimes I wear my hair in a small bun gathered at the nape of my neck. I have larger pantyhose bands that I use for afro puffs. The nylon stretches so that I can have the size puff that I want to wear that day. And I have extremely large ones that are suitable for headbands.

How to Make a Ponytail Headband
Here is a good video on how to make a nylon headband. The video shows how to make a small one for babies. But you could probably use one that size for ponytails. Or apply the same technique using a leg from one of your pantyhose and cut to whatever length you need.

In the video, the nylon is sewn together. But you don't have to do it that way. You can just tie the pantyhose in a knot if you want to. Just position the knot underneath the back of your hair and no one will ever know.

You can make an inexpensive pantyhose headband in under five minutes. You will get lots of use out of it. And you can replace it easily or make more for less than the cost of a store bought headband.
