Five Reasons to Quit a Job

Take This Job and Shove It..

Some of us are lucky enough to find jobs we really enjoy, while many others are content just to make it through their shift and go home. Whether you are a clock watcher or looking for the next big opportunity, here are some warning signs for when it's time to quit your job, update your resume, and start looking for new work.

Road Block

If your career path has hit a brick wall at your current job, then it's time to bail. I've been there myself, and it's a most unpleasant feeling to be passed over for promotion after promotion. Either figure out why you can't succeed, or move on. If it's you vs. nepotism, you'll never win.

Breakin' the Law

I had a friend who worked for a doctor that was handing out pain medication prescriptions like candy at Halloween. My friend quit because he knew that doctor was going to be busted, and less than a year later that doctor was arrested after a lengthy investigation from local narcotics officers. If you see something illegal going on at your job, it's definitely time to get out of there.

Sinking Ship

Businesses fail all the time, especially restaurants and bars. If you see less customers every day and notice that your paycheck seems to be dwindling, then it is time to move on. Don't feel obligated to go down with the ship. What's the point of putting a bunch of your time and hard work into a dying company? Let the owners of the business stay until the bitter end, unless they are giving away the office furniture.

Opportunity Doesn't Always Knock

Another good reason to quit a job is when you find something better. This may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people will get in one job and stay there for twenty or so years and never look anywhere else. Comfort zones are nice and all, but if you see something that looks good, at least put in an application and maybe it'll open doors to bigger and better things.

Find Happiness

The number one reason for when you know it's time to quit a job is when the job makes you miserable. Maybe you are sick of the constantly ringing phones or maybe the customers drive you crazy. Perhaps your boss is a bi-polar lunatic in serious need of medication. Either way, there comes a time when you must stop tolerating how awful the job is and look for something new. Life is too short to be unhappy.
