Cancun and Riviera Maya are popular beach destinations that are right next to each other, but they are many miles apart when it comes to what's offered. If you are looking to avoid the city atmosphere and have the opportunity to learn about the Mayan culture and ecotourism, Riviera Maya might be a better option. There you can find a big selection of some of the best hotels and all-inclusives for couples, as well as resorts for families.
Beaches
With many of the large hotels spread apart, you're bound to find more sand to stretch out on in Riviera Maya than Cancun. You may also notice that the water is a bit more turquoise in this area, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to see. Riviera Maya has the largest coral reef located in the northern hemisphere. This allows for spectacular diving and snorkeling. In addition, you can find space to lay back or swim lakes, rivers and ponds throughout Riviera Maya.
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen lies within the Riviera Maya as a center point for shopping, restaurants and beautiful beaches. It's definitely more of a beach town than anything you are going to find in Cancun. When you walk through the streets of Playa del Carmen you won't be facing major malls, department stores or a selection of chain restaurants. Instead, you can sample local Mayan food and Mezcal, and bargain with the locals for silver jewelry and leather.
Ecotourism
Tropical is one word to describe Riviera Maya and that's the way they like it. This is where they are as concerned with nature as they are with nurturing you on your vacation. You will find the (literally) greener hotels in Rivera Maya in comparison to Cancun. Acres of plants, trees and flowers adorn resorts, and everything possible is done to protect the plant and animal life - including the beautiful plumed birds -- with strict guidelines about using chemicals.
Tulum
It's a guarantee that you've never been any place like Tulum before as it is the one and only known ancient archeological ruins on the sea. Spend a few hours or an entire day exploring the Pre-Columbian Mayan culture. You will find 60 fascinating structures within this city that give you a glimpse into Mayan life in the 13th century. Tours of the ruins are available, but make sure you leave time to see the highlight where it all comes together up on a cliff that overlooks the Caribbean Sea.
Xcaret
A cross between a theme park a tropical jungle and a lesson in ecology, Xcaret is a must see that you can only find in Riviera Maya. If you stay in the area you can get a multi-day pass (discounted at some local hotels) and really explore. Among the things you can find there are underground rivers and lagoons, a wildlife breeding farm, a coral reef aquarium and even a Mexican wine cellar that takes you through a 400 year history of the beverage in this country.
