Five Reasons to Be United Methodist

Malcolm Tatum
With twelve million adherents around the world, the United Methodist Church provides a nurturing spiritual home that is attractive to many Christians. Here are some of the reasons why.

THE WESLEYAN QUADRILATERAL

With all Christians, United Methodists affirm the Bible as central to Christian faith and practice. The Church also understands that along with Scripture, the elements of experience, tradition, and reason inform the reading of Scripture and help Christians to relate the text to every generation.

EMPHASIS ON WALKING THE WALK

United Methodists have long encouraged those who accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior to put their faith into action in their communities and in the world in general. For many United Methodists, doing so brings to live the commandment to love the Lord and to love all humanity.

WORSHIP

United Methodists vary in worship styles, ranging from contemporary to traditional high church. The Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed are often read in worship services, providing a strong connection with both the historical church and the church universal. Many congregations offer more than one worship service each Sunday, making it possible to enjoy different worship experiences.

A WELCOMING CHURCH

United Methodists place a high premium on being a welcoming body, making sure visitors feel at home. Greetings during the service, sometimes known as the Peace, encourage members to introduce themselves to visitors while also greeting one another. Potluck suppers are a big part of Methodist tradition and often allow visitors to get to know more about the people and the congregation while sharing a meal.

OPEN COMMUNION

The United Methodist Church practices open communion. This means that all Christians, regardless of denominational affiliation, are welcome to partake of the bread and wine during a communion service. While typically observed with a great deal of reverence, communion in the United Methodist tradition is a time of celebration and the chance to bring one's troubles to the table and be refreshed in body, mind, and spirit.

For anyone seeking a church home that is supportive, open, and provides the opportunity to grow while also maintaining a solid foundation in Christian thought, the United Methodist Church is worth considering.
