1. It manages to stay timeless
Even though the story takes place in the 40's before TV ever came along, the plot is so true and sharp, you could take the script and play it out right in 2010. All of the events in the movie, like getting a tree, writing an elementary school essay, dealing with neighborhood kids, little brothers, a strange dad, all hold true today. Even when we watch great classics like, "It's a Wonderful Life," we still know we're watching an old movie from another time. Not so with "A Christmas Story."
2. Great Acting/Great Writing
The writing is dry and sharp with a very quick wit, and the cast does a great job acting up to speed. Based on the novel written by Jean Shepherd, the screenplay is one of the best adaptations of a book ever. The character acting is brilliant with Melinda Dillon and Peter Billingsley anchoring a great ensemble as 'Mom' and 'Dad'.
3. Great Ensemble, but no blockbuster actors
Proof you don't need huge stars to make a great movie, while a lot of the actors were well known and respected when this movie was made, most of it's longevity can be attributed to not having too well known actors in the roles. There's no tabloid history or anything like that to compare the characters to. They are purely what we see on the screen in out memories.
4. "You'll shoot your eye out!"
Seriously, the best line ever written in a movie. How many of you immediately say that when you see a toy gun or even a real one? It's the line we hear throughout while Ralphie pines for his bb gun. And guess what? He almost did.
5. Everybody's been Ralphie at one point or another.
We've all been Ralphie on a mission to get that toy we have coveted as a kid and all of the 'grown up' barriers along the way. Strange dads, overbearing mothers, whiny siblings, and even the build up of excitement not panning out the way we wanted it to.
So there you have it. Five reasons why "A Christmas Story" will always hold the spot as the best holiday movie ever. It's going to take a lot to unseat it, that's for sure!
