Five Recommend Movies for Halloween

Count Your Kids in on These

Rian Wing

While the list below may not be the very best scary movies for Halloween, the following list is a short list of classic horror movies that are great to watch with some children. Horror can be made into something fun. Point out the bad acting, the old clips of fake movie magic and let the kids laugh along with you at the sheer absurdity of it all.

1. Dracula (Original)
2. Bride of Frankenstein
3. It
4. The Fog (Original)
5. Return of the Living Dead

Dracula - Bela Logusi

Who can compete with the original? Who can terrify you with a single scene of Dracula standing over you? Those long fingers, those pointed ears, and the blood dripping from his teeth.

We all know the story of Dracula, his magnificent ability to make an individual do as he wishes. We all know that each victim of Dracula either dies or is made his slave for eternity. Yet, do we know the true story of Dracula from the master, Bela Logusi?

Bela Logusi was a master before his time. He drew an audience into his world and made them regret taking that journey. He lived inside horror and brought all of us the greatest horror movies in his time period.

Dracula is by far one of the most terrifying and horrific characters ever created. Logusi brought him to life for our viewing pleasures.

Do not forget your cross, garlic, and prayers after watching this flick. Your life might depend on it.

The Bride of Frankenstein - Boris Karloff

The Bride of Frankenstein as a sequel surpassed its predecessor, Frankenstein. Through the twists and turns of this movie, we find yet another master of his time, Boris Karloff.

He uses the ability to take characters and turns their strengths and weaknesses against one another. Through friendship, love, and hate, you find that even a mad scientist has a heart and a love that even he cannot control.

While watching this movie, you find yourself confused as to whether it is a love story with a terrible ending or a horror movie with a wonderful love story ending. Either way, Karloff takes you inside his mind and lets you walk around and discover the wonder he has to offer.

Would you give up the safety of others for love or would you let the most horrifying monster walk to world alone?

It - Stephen King

The master of time has invaded our children's fears and memories. The simplicity of a clown coming to haunt the lives of a few children is beyond the comprehension of even the smartest adult.

It is beyond one of the scariest movies ever created. Keep in mind that this clown, though it may seem innocent and friendly, has mind control powers to make a grown man commit suicide just by the smallest thought.

This movie makes you think twice about heading to the circus on your next family trip. How many people do you know are afraid of clowns because of this film? Are you one of these individuals? I know that I am.

The Fog - The Original

How many of you are scared of the dark? What about being scared of the dark and have a think, dense fog with creatures killing people in it? Would you be scared of that?

The Fog, of course the original one, is one of those movies that makes you realize a deep seeded fear that you never knew you had. It makes your skin crawl and get those tiny, little goose bumps all over your body.

Just the idea of things floating around in fog and knowing that you cannot see in fog to begin with, makes this movie all the much more horrifying. Keep your friends close and you might want to actual tie a rope to them the next time you're outside in the fog.

Return of the Living Dead - The Original

"Brains! Brains! I want to eat brains!" If that line doesn't make you either laugh or cry, there is something seriously wrong with you. This movie goes to the point of being horrifying and to down right hilarious.

The acting in the movie is definitely something to leave alone but the story behind the back acting is great. Would you feel safe in a town where the dead were walking screaming out to eat your brains?

Watch where you go on Halloween night, you just might be walking with the dead.

Summary

Some of these movies are a couple of the great horror flicks of our time, just keep in mind they are fake. No one wants to suck your blood or eat your brains. Keep in the spirit of Halloween and pass down these great movies to your children. Sleep tight and lock your doors.

I'm not sure if the Hills Have Eyes was a book or not. All I know is I want to see that movie. I love this time of year, you can actually scare the crap out of yourself watching horror movies. It is freaking great!

Wasn't The Hills Have Eyes a book first?

  • Sherri Granato10/9/2006

Two other great scary, creepy & freaky movies are Wolf Creek & The Hills Have Eyes. These are definitely not for kids as they leave a lasting impression on the viewer.

Great jog. I prefer the classic horror movies, too.

Pennywise is exactly why I am afraid of clowns.

  • Timothy Sexton10/7/2006

One of the creepiest characters to ever appear on TV was Tim Curry's Pennywise. There is just something really macabre about that scene when he's in the water waving.

Great job! Good choices and nice summaries.
