DMB, Zeppelin, Petty, Marley and the Beatles

Rich Heltzel
Road trips are the American dream. Freedom of the open road can help us learn more about ourselves, our friendships and our surroundings. The only thing needed is a vehicle, gasoline, coffee and good music. Although you might have forgotten your toothbrush an hour after leaving, at least you have your favorite albums. These five are just as important as the tires on your wheels.

Dave Matthews BandLive at Red Rocks. This 2005 album is a live recording of the famous group that started in the early 1990's. With a mix of acoustic, jazz and smooth world-music influences, it's a feel good music that will have you singing along. It wouldn't hurt to grab a few studio albums as well, but most fans of DMB know that live is best.

Led ZeppelinIV. The fourth album of this famous classic rock band is necessary for rocking out with your buddies. This bestselling album of the group will put you back in the early 1970's. The solos from Jimmy Page will have you wanting to change destination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Tom PettyGreatest Hits. This is a compilation of Petty's greatest hits and happens to be his best selling album. There isn't one song with the smooth vocals and catchy tunes that wouldn't blend with the landscapes of America. Whether you are in the flat plains or mountains, Petty is a hit all over the country.

Bob MarleyLegend. Every song on this album wants to make you smile and dance. The Jamaican songwriter and musician has changed the world and brought reggae into the mainstream of America and the World. This album gives a list of his most popular and top hits of his time.

BeatlesOne. This album has to hit the list. Over 31 million copies sold, this re-mastered set gives almost every number one single from the group. It is a must have for not only the trip, but for your home. Singing Let it Be while cruising the open road may be just as memorable as any famous attraction.

These albums are only a start to a great road trip collection. More can be added, but just make sure these are playing over the airwaves no matter which stretch of road you are taking. Whether you like jazz, country, hard rock or anything in between, music makes the trip just as important as where you're going.
