Five Simple Homemade Halloween Costumes for Girls

Kelly Morris

Want to dress your daughter in a cute Halloween costume that you can make yourself and that won't break the bank? Here are some ideas you can pull off even if you're not crafty or can't sew. You may already have many of the items needed for these costumes at home but if you have to shop for some of the items, they shouldn't cost too much and should be easy to find at local shops.

Bunny

Dress your daughter in a pink, white or brown sweat suit and matching shoes. Stitch a large pompom or powder puff to the backside for the tail. Cut long ears from construction paper or poster board and attach them to a matching plastic headband.

Butterfly

Dress your daughter in a black sweat suit and black shoes. Cut poster board into the shape of butterfly wings and use paint or markers, glitter and glue to decorate the wings (little girls usually love to help make the wings). Use a hole punch to punch holes near the edges of the wings. Thread a black ribbon through the holes and tie the wings around your little girl's waist. Attach pipe cleaners to a plastic headband for antennas. You can add small pompoms to the pipe cleaners for the tops of the antennas.

Kitten

Dress your daughter in a yellow, white, tan or brown sweat suit and matching shoes. Use matching fabric to sew a long tail and pin it to the bottom of the sweat suit with a large safety pin. Cut cat ears from construction paper and attach them to a matching headband. Use makeup to draw a black nose and whiskers.

Lady Bug

Dress your daughter in a black sweat suit and black shoes. Use a large piece of red poster board or paint a piece of cardboard red. Cut it into a large oval and paint black dots on it. Make two loops of black elastic and staple them to the poster board or cardboard for arm holes. Attach pipe cleaners to a plastic headband for antennas. You can add small pompoms to the pipe cleaners for the tops of the antennas.

Miss America

Find an old bridesmaid dress or formal. Check local thrift stores if you're not sure where to get one. Add a pair of long white gloves, a tiara, jewelry and a pair of fancy shoes. Make a sash from a wide ribbon and write "Miss America" on it in glitter.
