1. Understand going into the process of learning the stock market that it is going to take some time and that you will need to be very patient. No one can possibly become a professional in the stock market overnight. If it were that easy, everyone would be millionaires, and we certainly know that isn't the case. Also, realize that learning the stock market doesn't mean you won't make mistakes, making mistakes is part of the learning curve.
2. Do not let yourself be defeated before you get started. This is a VERY common mistake among individuals when they are trying to learn about the stock market. I often hear people who want to learn the stock market comment that they don't think they can ever understand because its just too complex for them. If you think this way, you might as well not waste your time trying to learn. You can learn it, if you are in the right frame of mind.
3. Start out with the basics of investing in the stock market and use all the resources available to you. Investopedia and Motley Fool are my two favorite sites that describe the basics of how the stock market operates and why a company offers shares of its stock to individuals. This is also a good place to understand what types of stocks and investments are right for you.
4. Slowly move up through the more complex issues involving the stock market. For example, take a look at understanding a balance sheet, different types of valuation methods, and fundamental versus technical valuations for stocks.
5. Finally, when you feel like you are starting to get a little bit of a grip on things, try out the stock market by using a stock market simulator game. This is way to play the stock market on line without putting any of your actual money to work. I highly suggest doing this because it is a great way to learn from your early mistakes without it costing you in actual dollars.
Learning the basics of the stock market and investing isn't a quick process, but it is something that you can do if you set goals and work a little bit at a time!
