• Legumes. High in protein, legumes has been known to reduce the risk of developing diabetes and some cancers. The high fiber content assists with digestion and weight loss. Dried legumes are best, as some canned beans are loaded with sodium. Check your labels.
• Nuts and Berries. Berries are a natural sweetener. Nuts are high in calories, but are an excellent source of energy for the mid-day drag. A handful is plenty. Both of these foods can provide a healthy, satisfying snack. Add to oatmeal in the mornings for a healthier start to your day.
• Grapefruit. Eating grapefruit is probably one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself. It helps to lower cholesterol and has high antioxidant properties. The low glycemic index helps burn fat.
• Fish. The particular benefit here is the abundance of omega three fatty acids, which help to fight cancer, help prevent cardiovascular disease, promote a healthy immune system and brain function. Lower in saturated fats, this food is good for weight loss. Recent studies have also shown that the omega three fatty acids can help fend off depression, which means no "emotional eating".
• Chile's. Spices kick up the metabolism. There's no gulping down mouthfuls here! Eating more slowly allows the natural process of digestion to take place without the system being overwhelmed. Chile's contain a compound called "capsaicin", which literally burns calories for up to twenty minutes after you've finished your meal.
The list of superfoods goes on. Do your research, and see which you like best. But as always, remember that these foods are best in moderation. Don't let the fact that they're healthier fool you. Be sure to eat a balanced diet, and supplement with exercise at least three days a week. The object of weight loss is to burn more calories than you are consuming. Enjoy!
