Five Things for First Week of College

Jesse Schmitt
The first week of college can be rough. Going away to school is many kids dream but once they get there, the dream can quickly turn into a nightmare if they're not careful. Here's five things every college freshman should do during their first week on campus to ensure a drama free first semester and a successful time away at college.

Roommate Acclimation - If you're going away to a school, you'll have a roommate. When you meet your roommate you should try to like them as much as you can. You're going to have to at least tolerate one another for the first year. Rather than focus on how you're different, embrace your commonalities. Chances are your roommate's going to be as anxious as you are so break the ice and even if you're unfamiliar with the things they like, take the dive and try something new. Trying new things and learning about yourself and others is what college is all about.

Area Assimilation - Another important thing to do is find out where you are. You're in a college town so chances are there's great food, entertainment, and other essentials nearby. Get familiar with whatever is within walking distance and find the spots where buses pick up and drop off so you always know where to take off from and arrive to.

Campus Assimilation - College classes don't wait for everyone to be present to start; it's a good idea to get familiar with your way around the campus. Find your way to class before you're under the pressures of the clock.

Get Your Books - Another thing that every college freshman should do the first week of school is get all your books. Even when your class schedule says that you're not using a book until a certain day, you should get your books beforehand. You can keep up on your reading and get ahead so if your teacher goes off on a tangent you can kiss up and know where they're headed.

Get Your Supplies - One more thing you should do is make sure to get all your supplies. If you need graphing calculators, music tablature, jock straps, colored-chalk, periodic tables, or anything else you need to get these things. This is another reason you should familiarize yourself with the town that your college is in. You won't always be able to get what you need on campus.

Of course you should find your way around town too and if you don't have a car you should make friends with someone who does!
