Five Things Your Grand-Kids Do Better - Just Admit It

Jaipi Sixbear

My grand-kids do a lot of things better than I do. I try not to let it get to me. The world of today is, after all, much different from the one I grew up in. We still had phones with dials back in the 70s. Now any kind of land-line is practically obsolete. Even old ladies like me have cell phones. Of course, we don't know how to use them to their full potential. That's why we have grand-kids. Just admit it. There are some things your grand-kids do better than you.

Smart phones are a mystery to me. Who has time to use all those apps? I haven't even figured out my regular old school cell yet. Hand my grand-kids a smart phone. They'll work virtual miracles with it. In my opinion, it's not the phone that has to be smart, it's the user. I'll be upgrading to a smart phone in the near future. Have to keep up with the times you know. It's a good thing I have my grand-kids to explain it to me when I do.

I just got a GPS for Christmas. That's good because even though my new smart phone will likely have an app for that, I won't know how to use it. Thank-you awesome boyfriend. Now I can find my way around the Mile High City without calling you 45 times a day. Wait, was this present really for me? No need to read the instructions. My grand-kids already know how to use it. I'll just take them when traversing unfamiliar territory. I'm not a total idiot, though. I do know how to push the button that directs me home. Of course, my grand-daughter did enter my home address for me. Meh, who cares. I'll get it eventually.

My grand-kids are better at Google maps too. Yup, my grand-kids are even better at what they likely call old school GPS than I am. I know that because I've had people call me to look something up for them while driving. I write online for a living. That doesn't mean I can do everything online. Good thing the grand-kids have smart phones. I can call them for help when someone else calls me for help. Hey, I'm not afraid to admit my grand-kids are technically advantaged. In fact, I'm proud of them.

My grand-kids have iPods and they're not afraid to use them. I haven't the foggiest idea. How do they get all those songs to fit in that tiny little thing? I'll never have to know. If I get one, I'll just have my grand-kids show me how to load and play them. I don't see it happening real soon though. I never even had a chance to get an MP3 player before they lost popularity. By the time I get an iPod and learn to use it, they'll be outdated too.

Now there's a whole new category of things my grand-kids do better. I'm talking about iPads, nooks, kindles and other tablets. Never used a single one of them. Heck, I'm still trying to get used to my desk-top. Why should I learn anyway? The grand-kids have it covered. Here's the thing, though. There are plenty of things I can do better than the grand-kids too. Sure, the things I'm an expert at are kind of old school. There is one good thing though. You'll never hear me saying I'm bored when the power goes out or cell service is down. I can keep myself entertained just fine without it.

I'm astounded watching 4 and 5 year olds whiz through apps on their Smart Phones and play Angry Bird! But we didn't grow up with this technology like they are.

Weird...can't get my original comment to go through. LOL. So...reworded: Love this! On rare occasions I find that my children know something better than I. Since I work with and love technology, I find it easy to learn new devices and software. Every so often however, my kids know a little more than I.

Fun Tidbit: You know you are in the Technology Era when your children buy you a new MP3 player to replace your broken iPod for your birthday instead of the typical handmade ornament/gift! :D
