Five Things to Do Instead of Smoking

Ms. Wettin
Congratulations on making an effort to quit smoking. You can be successful. Do not cave in and resort back to nicotine. When you feel a craving coming on, try one of the ideas listed below instead of lighting up.

I quit smoking nearly fourteen months ago. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I made the decision to quit smoking so that I could set a better example for my children and so I could be around to see them become adults. Although the first few weeks were difficult, within a month I was proud to be a non-smoker and ashamed that I ever was a smoker.

Chew Gum

We have all heard it a thousand times, but chewing gum does help lessen the cravings. Keep gum handy, so you can chew on a piece the next time you think of smoking.

Treat Yourself

Now that you are not wasting all that money on cigarettes, you probably have a bit more cash in your wallet. Go shopping and treat yourself to something that you would not normally purchase. Another option is going out to eat with a friend or family member.

Exercise

Unfortunately, most of us former smokers know that when we quit smoking, we often pack on a few extra pounds. Cravings for nicotine can too often turn into food cravings. The next time you are tempted by one of those cravings, jump on a treadmill or do another form of exercise. When you are finished, you will feel better from the inside out.

Take a Nap

Think about all the time you spent smoking. You should have some extra time on your hands now that you have given the habit up. The next time you think about going to the store to buy a pack of cigarettes, lie down and take a nap instead.

Spend Time with Your Children

Talk to your children or grandchildren about your decision to quit smoking. It is hard to disappoint a child, so enlist them to be a part of your support group. When an urge to smoke comes upon you, take some time to play with your children or grandchildren, which may help you remember why you quit smoking in the first place.

I hope that these tips will help you to remain a non-smoker. I wish you the best in overcoming your addiction.
