Five Things that I Liked as a Child that Are No Longer Made

Long before the huge influx of video games, cell phones, and MP3 players children were exposed to simple things as a way of passing time. Many years ago when I was younger I can recall several things that I liked that are now either no longer made or they have watered them down by modernizing them.

Growing up I remember several things that I liked that are no longer made such as; metal lunch boxes, paper cap guns, electronic football games, Mr. Quarterback, and windbreaker jackets.

Now let me start by talking about metal lunch boxes. These were very popular when I was a child. Although they were not that durable, yet it seemed almost like a right of passage for every hold to have one. They made kids eager to take want to take their own lunch to school. Their popularity quickly declined when we started to get more environmental friendly. They are no longer made with metal but have been replaced by plastic ones.

Now paper cap guns were very fun to play with. This was during a time when children did not get hurt playing with toys. You bought the caps in rolls and they fit right into the toy gun. If your gun became broken or you didn't have one you could just simple take a rock and rub it across the paper caps to watch a small quick flame pop up. These are no longer made because they were replaced by circular plastic caps.

An electronic football games was something that I played with for hours when I was a child. It was nothing but a metal board that had the football field markings on it. They had all of the football teams available. You simply put the football players from the two teams on opposite sides. Then you would slightly adjust the dial at the bottom of the figures. Once this was done then you would adjust the controls on the board. When you turned it on it would slight vibrate causing the figures to move around. Of course this toy was forced into non-existence when the first generation of electronic video games was introduced.

Mr. Quarterback was in my opinion one of the simplest games that a boy could ever have had. It was nothing but a device that had a handle on it that was where a football could be inserted. It would throw the football to you. There was a dial on it where you could either set it to throw short passes or long passes. This was an ideal toy for me because I was an only child so I spent most of my time playing by myself.

Windbreaker jackets were nice for the time that they came out. Not only were they lightweight but they did not cost much. I think I may have had about two or three of them. No longer make them because after you washed them a few times or if a good rain got on them they were not any good.

I am sure that the five things that I liked as a child that are no longer made are just a few of many. It just proves that many of the things that they make today are not as durable, are more expensive, and are not able to maintain people's interest. Sometimes things that are simple might just be better.
