Each year most people will experience common cold symptoms at least once. Other people seem to never get sick even when those around them are falling like flies. What is their secret? The common cold Symptoms are rarely life threatening, but they can make life a bit miserable for a few days. Here are some tips for common cold prevention that may help you avoid this unpleasantness and join the group that never seems to get sick.

1. The first trick of common cold prevention is to live a healthy life with good food and plenty of exercise. If your body is performing well it should also mean that your immune system can fight off things more easily. This is backed by recent research by the University of Massachusetts which found that those who exercised had 25% less upper respiratory tract infections then those who didn't take part in regular exercise.

2. It is important to keep in mind how people catch these types of infection. One of the easiest ways is through human contact. This is why it is so important to wash your hands frequently and to try and avoid touching your face. If somebody sneezes into their hands and then shakes your hand this could spread the common cold. If you do have a cough or sneeze make sure you protect other people by using a handkerchief and washing your hands straight afterwards.

3. Make sure you spend time outdoors. This is especially important during the winter months when people tend to spend a lot of time indoors in groups; so there is more chance of infection. It is also claimed that central heating can make the body dry and one remedy for this is a walk outside in the fresh air.

4. It is also recommended that people drink plenty of fluids and avoid dehydration. The fact that the body is made up mostly of water means that it needs a lot to function properly. It is usually recommended that you drink eight glasses a day; remember that caffeine drinks can actually dehydrate you because they make you urinate more.

5. Relaxation is great for the body and mind and it can also reduce the likelihood of catching colds. Studies suggest that a relaxed body leads to a more effective immune system. Activities like Tai Chi, Meditation, and Yoga are all great for reducing stress and keeping you relaxed.

Common cold prevention makes sense if you want to avoid the unpleasant symptoms associated with this condition. Most of the things you need to do are simple and part of a normal healthy lifestyle.
