Soil
It's best not to plant huckleberry plants in wet areas. It's important that the soil provides the roots with good drainage. The soil should also be loose and acidic, lying somewhere between 4.5 and 5.6 pH. You can also add plenty of organic matter when preparing the soil for planting.
Weather
You should not have your huckleberry bush outside if there is danger of frost. After the possibility of frost has gone, you can plant them outside giving them full sun. Although they can grow successfully in lightly shaded areas, they won't produce as much fruit.
Water
You should keep the roots of your huckleberry plant fairly moist. During the first few weeks of growing, you should give it water on a daily basis. Your general watering schedule should be based on the weather. Warmer temperatures require more water and vice versa. You should also give the bush liquid fertilizer every week or so.
Fruit
Huckleberry bushes bloom anytime during the late spring to early summer or between May and July. You should harvest the berries before the onset of frost in the fall. The berries are ready to be picked when they have a dark purple color.
Pests
There are a few pests that cause problems for huckleberry plants. The two most common pests include potato beetles and caterpillars. You will need to keep a close eye on the bush because they can sometimes destroy the plant entirely. It's a good idea to keep plants of the same family away from each other in your garden.
These are a few tips for growing huckleberry plants. You should plant them in fairly acidic soil that provides good drainage. It's important that you not take them outside if there is danger of frost. The berries will be ready to pick once they have turned dark purple.
