Just because you are a single parent this does not mean that you can not take a fun filled family vacation. All it really takes is a bit of advance planning, and budgeting. Below are five tips that may prove helpful when it comes to planning a getaway.
Save up your vacation time
Being able to save up your vacation time really depends on your job, and what you are allowed to do. Check your company vacation policy and see how much vacation time you get per year. In some cases you may be able to carry over your vacation time from one year to the next, or if you don't use it by the end of the year, you may end up losing it. Some single parents may have the option of working from home on occasion. If you can include some of your work from home time with your vacation you may be able to extend your time off. Be sure to check with your employer to make sure that it is ok for you to work away from the home. Most employers don't mind as long as the work really gets done.
Skip the travel agent
Even though most may say differently, the fact is that you really don't need a travel agent to plan a vacation for you, and your children. Remember that when you use a travel agent you will have to pay them an extra fee. Instead put that money toward your vacation. It will not take as much time as money as you think to plan out a vacation that will equal rest, and relaxation for you, and fun for the kids.
Plan a group vacation
With a group vacation their comes a sizeable discount for many trips. For example if you are planning on booking a flight, you may be able to receive a discount for booking multiple tickets at once. Hotels often give up to twenty percent off for groups of twenty people, or more. Look for locations that offer some type of group discount. Also taking others along with you on vacation will allow you a little bit of break for yourself. You can ask them to take the kids for a few hours to the hotel swimming pool while you rest and relax for a bit. Single moms deserve a little bit of break time as well, and it is worth the advance planning process.
Set up a vacation budget
Before you even start making phone calls, set up a budget, and decide how much you want spend on your vacation. Then stick with your budget. Be sure to include, food, and at least one souvenir per child. Kids always ask to buy something, so why not give them a small amount of spending money, and just be sure to not go over the original budget you have set.
Give your children a say
Why not allow your child to have a say in the vacation destination. This will make it more enjoyable for everyone. Create a variety of choices to choose from, and then see which location would offer the most activities for your kids to enjoy.
