As you age your metabolism slows down but that does not mean you have to give in and succumb to weight gain. Excess weight can lead to health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure but you can do something to increase your metabolism without exercising all day. Whether you are looking to maintain your weight or lose weight, follow these diet tips to lead a healthier lifestyle and boost your metabolism.

Water
Did you know that when you feel hungry you might actually be thirsty? Water is essential to your diet so be sure to drink a minimum of 64 ounces a day. Water means water, not coffee, soda or juice which can all add unnecessary sugar and calories. If you do not like to drink plain water, squeeze a bit of lemon or lime to add flavor. According to Registered Dietitian Amy Carlson, drinking water can help minimize food cravings and reduce appetite so do yourself a favor and make a point of consuming eight cups of water a day.

Fiber
Food that is high in fiber is not only good for your health but it will you fill you up longer so you are less likely to reach for sugary snacks. Carlson suggests that fiber can prevent certain cancers, heart disease, and even constipation. Look for high fiber foods like beans, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal.

Fat
Certain fat is good for you like essential fatty acids found in olive oil, avocados, and salmon but too much saturated fat can be bad for your health. Try to eat a diet that is low in saturated fat but do not neglect the essential fatty acids. Read nutrition labels and opt for products that contain less than three grams of saturated fat per 100 calories. Examples of foods that are high in saturated fat are donuts, bacon, and butter.

Sugar
According to Nutrition Diva, sugar is high in calories and can cause you to gain excess weight. Eating too much sugar can raise insulin levels and lead to diabetes. However, the key to a healthy diet is to eat everything in moderation. You may have sugar every once in a while but try to limit the amount of sugar you consume overall.

Eat Often
Did you know that if you eat more often you will actually boost your metabolism? Eat four to six small meals per day with each meal ranging between 250-500 calories (depending on your gender, how many meals you eat a day, and your weight loss goals). Eating frequently will help stabilize your blood sugar so you do not have lows that will tempt you to reach for fatty, sugary snacks.
