Choosing a Style:
I think the most important tip I can give is too make sure that your facial hair style is age appropriate. Try to keep it simple and make sure the style you choose is appropriate for your business and social circles. Facial hair also tends to accent your facial features. If you have a long and thin face, a goatee may not be for you. It will make your face look even more long and thin. A man with a very round face may likewise not choose to have a full beard because this will make his face look even rounder and chubbier. If you're not sure how to go, ask a woman friend or your hair stylist what they would recommend. It always helps to do your research. Look in magazines to see what styles look good with your face type. Lamb chops are always a no-no!
Right Tool for the Job:
Once you have chosen a style it is time to implement it. If you don't want to spend almost as much as a hair cut for a trim, and want to do it yourself, then it is essential you purchase the right tools for the job. If you like to be clean shaven, make sure to buy a good reusable razor. They may cost more, but I find you will get a much better shave out of them and much more use. If you plan on keeping some kind of a beard, you should buy a good comb and a good multi use clipper for the job. Of course a good pair of small scissors can be invaluable.
Cleaning:
It is just as important to clean your facial hair to keep it looking great. Would you use that bar of soap on your hair? Then don't use in on your beard. Use the same quality shampoo and conditioner on your great looking facial hair, as you do on your head. The same goes for conditioner. If it adds shine and body to the head on your hair, it will do the same for your beard. If you find the need to use other products such as mouse or even wax for you moustache, make sure you always use quality ingredients.
Shaving Creams:
As with any hair care products, shaving cream is essential. Always use a quality shave cream. I personally like the gels, if you go for the stuff in a can. The canned stuff is fine, and comes in many varieties including moisturizing and sensitive. The gels seem to provide better lubrication and lasts longer. I also really like the old fashioned shaving soaps. There is something about a mug full of good soap, a hot brush and a close clean shave. These also make great gifts for men. Also make sure you clean out your razor after each stroke to make sure you have as little friction as possible.
Razor burn and Bumps:
It doesn't make sense to spend a lot of time and effort to get a good shave if you end up with your face burning, dry, rough and bumpy. The best advice I can give here is to use quality products, such as razors and shaving creams. Make sure they contain moisturizers and as many natural ingredients as possible. Also make sure all your tools are kept clean and sharp. If you find you have sensitive skin, find products that are specially formulated for you.
It is not hard to keep great looking facial hair. The main key is to treat it like you would the hair on your head, and give it just as much love and attention.
