If you have terrazzo flooring in your home, you will certainly want to keep it looking beautiful. There are a few things you need to know about maintaining this type of floor. This article will give you a few tips for maintaining terrazzo floors.

Dust

You should know that dust acts as an abrasive on your terrazzo flooring. Therefore, it's a good idea for you to sweep up your floor on a daily basis. A traditional broom and dustpan are suitable. However, a dust mop won't run the risk of scratching like a traditional broom since it glides over the floor.

Marble

It's also important that you know terrazzo is made from marble and other types of stone. You should avoid using an abrasive cleaner on your floor. You may scratch the marble and damage your floor.

Shine

Your terrazzo floor will stay shiny as long as you mop it with light water occasionally. It's best to dry the floor as soon as you're done. You should avoid using a typical floor wax on terrazzo flooring since it leaves residue behind that will accumulate over time. The floor will also be slippery.

pH

If you want to be careful, then you should use a cleaner designed specifically for terrazzo flooring. Whatever you do, you shouldn't use a standard household cleaner. It may contain alkalis or acids that may cause damage to your floor. These cleaners include wax removers, soaps, and detergents.

Sealing

It's very important that you seal your terrazzo floor. If you don't seal it, it will be very porous. A porous floor will get stained easily if you spill something on it. Since acid causes discoloration on this flooring, you shouldn't use an acid-based sealer. You should use a water-based sealer instead.

These are a few tips on maintaining terrazzo flooring. Dust acts as an abrasive, so you should try to sweep up on a daily basis. It's also best not to use an abrasive cleaner since you can scratch the marble.
