Cravings Can Be Diet Killers

Are you trying to reduce fat and/or sugar in your diet? It can be difficult when cravings kick in and your mouth is watering for a baked potato or a hamburger. The smell of my neighbors grilling out is enough to make me cheat after a long day of eating sensible. The diet roller coaster can be so discouraging. These tips can help you have the best of both worlds by letting you have some of those oh, so good comfort foods and not blowing your diet at the same time.

Reducing Fat and Sugar in Your Diet

The first tip is to mix tofu in with your burgers. Whether you eat turkey burgers or hamburgers, tofu can be mixed into the meat before you cook it to cut the fat content. If mixed in well, your family probably won't even know the difference. I add a few extra seasonings and chopped onions to disguise it. Sometimes I use Cajun seasonings and sometimes just seasoned salt. Though if you have high blood pressure, you should go easy on the salt.

The second way is to use plain yogurt instead of sour cream on your baked potato. Mix plain yogurt with a little lemon juice to the consistency that you want and use a seasoned salt to taste. You'll never know the difference. I think this tastes better than low fat sour cream myself.

The third way is to eat rice cakes instead of bread. Instead of that peanut butter sandwich, try peanut butter on a rice cake. Some rice cakes have zero fat and zero cholesterol. Sometimes I eat pepper jack soy cheese melted on a rice cake for breakfast. Almost as good as cheese toast, but no guilt.

One way to reduce sugar in your diet is to use Stevia to sweeten your coffee and/or tea. Stevia does taste a little bit different than sugar, but once I started using it, I came to prefer it over sugar.

One last way to reduce sugar in your diet is to cut your juice with soda water. You can enjoy grape juice and all its health benefits without drinking all that sugar. I usually mix two parts juice to one part soda water. This is a good substitute for those trying to cut down on sodas with caffeine as well.

Training Your Palate to Like Different Foods

These tips for reducing fat and sugar in your diet get better and better the more you try them. They don't always taste as good as the real thing, but I've grown to quite like them. The healthier you eat, the more you will crave healthy foods. It's all a matter of what you get used to, so why not take steps to reduce the sugar and fat in your diet? Your body will thank you for it.
