For the small child who wants a pet jumping right in with a high-demand animal like a dog may seem like the classic Christmas dream come true, but it may not be. If you are buying your child a pet and not the entire family, then it would be a good idea to start with a smaller animal like a goldfish or a hamster to teach your child pet care and responsibility. After they have proven themselves capable of being a responsible pet owner, they can graduate up to the animal of their choice.
