Five Tips and Suggestions for Giving Pets as Holiday Gifts

Think a Pet Purchase Through This Christmas Season

Pets are always an exceedingly wonderful Christmas present for children and adults alike. A little bit of forethought can go a long way when buying a pet for a gift. Here are a few suggestions to think about before visiting the pet shop.

Pet Book

If you are giving a pet as a Christmas present to someone who has never raised an animal before, or even if they have not raised this particular animal before, it is wise to give them a book detailing the animals care needs. A lifelong cat owner may know next to nothing about the different requirements for raising a rambunctious puppy. Give them a leg up on being a responsible pet owner by presenting them with a book that explains the basic requirements for care of the breed of dog or type of pet they are receiving.

Pet Graduation

For the small child who wants a pet jumping right in with a high-demand animal like a dog may seem like the classic Christmas dream come true, but it may not be. If you are buying your child a pet and not the entire family, then it would be a good idea to start with a smaller animal like a goldfish or a hamster to teach your child pet care and responsibility. After they have proven themselves capable of being a responsible pet owner, they can graduate up to the animal of their choice.

Pet Food

If you surprise someone with a pet for Christmas, then it would be smart to surprise them with a bag of appropriate pet food as well. Most stores will be closed all day Christmas, which can lead to a normally happy animal being quite perturbed and hungry before shops reopen the following day.

Think Ahead to Animal Growth

Don't fall victim to baby animal syndrome this holiday season by not thinking ahead to the grown up version of the pet. Many people see small animals - Labradors as puppies for instance - and fall in love. They are adorable little dogs - cute, fluffy, playful. However, they grow up fast and become quite large. If your friend lives in a small house or apartment without a yard, a large dog is going to require a lot of outdoor leash-time with them behind the leash. Consider how large the breed of animal you are purchasing will be compared to its living quarters.

Pet Necessities

Many pets, especially exotic pets, require a bit more equipment than the average dog or cat. Be considerate and purchase the necessities for your present's health before gifting it. For instance, if you are buying your boyfriend a reptile for Christmas, also buy him an aquarium and a heating lamp at the minimum.

Think ahead this holiday season before springing a pet on someone you love. Pets deserve a good home, and your friends and family deserve a well-thought out gift.
