Five Tips for Using Beaver Traps

If you live near a body of water, you may experience problems with beavers. They can cause flooding on your land as well as destroy your trees. Trapping them is a good way to deal with these problems. This article will give you a few tips for using beaver traps.

Type

There are different types of beaver traps. Some are lethal while others capture and keep the animal alive. There are snare traps as well as some designed to grab hold of the beaver's legs and keep it underwater to drown it. There is also a design that grips the beaver around the stomach and squeezes it to death.

Bait

One of the best types of wood to use in beaver traps is branches from a poplar tree. The branches should be about 1/2-inch thick in diameter. You can place them on top of the trap as well as on the shoreline near the trap.

Scent

Beavers are very territorial animals. Therefore, you can use beaver scent on your trap to attract the target. Beavers also use scent mounds which are usually found wherever the water level is low.

Fencing

It is best to route beavers into your awaiting trap. You can do this by placing logs on either side of it. They should be placed no more than ten feet on either side. You should also make sure that you anchor beaver traps so the animals won't push it out into the water.

Monitoring

If you want to catch and release the beaver, then it's important that you monitor it daily. If you leave the animal in the trap for too long, it will likely die. Also, be very careful if you want to release the trapped beaver. They can be very strong animals when they want.

These are a few tips for using beaver traps. You should bait the trap with branches from a poplar tree that are about 1/2-inches in diameter. Also, you should put logs on both sides of the trap so the beaver is routed into it.
