Smell
It's important that you wash rabbit traps thoroughly before using them. They will be able to detect your smell and avoid the trap if you don't. Using water with either soap or bleach is good enough. Also, it's a good idea to wash the trap before reusing it after catching a rabbit.
Bait
You will obviously need effective bait in order to lure the animals in. There are a variety of foods that you can use in rabbit traps. Some of the most common include apples, brussel sprouts, lettuce, and peanut butter. It should also go without saying that you can use carrots too.
Monitoring
It's also vital that you monitor rabbit traps frequently. A rabbit that is left caught in the cage overnight will be exposed to the elements and may die. Also, there is a chance that you accidentally caught another animal that you would need to release.
Placement
It's best to place rabbit traps along the routes that they use. They are habitual creatures and will follow these trails repeatedly. Also, you may not catch a rabbit quickly. You can increase your success rate by leaving the trap for a few days so the animals get used to it.
Type
There are different types of traps you can use. One of the choices you'll need to make is to use a single-entry or double-entry design. The double-entry design has the obviously advantage because it can trap the rabbit coming from either direction. There are also collapsible designs which are easier to transport.
Rabbit traps can also be made of various materials. A common material is wood. There are also mesh traps which are easier to hide, so you will likely catch more rabbits in them.
These are a few tips for using rabbit traps. Make sure you don't leave behind any of your human smells, or these little creatures will avoid the trap. Make sure you check the trap frequently because you don't want to stress out the caught animal unduly.
