Five Tips for Work at Home Parents to Increase Productivity and the Paycheck

Stephanie Craig
You can do a lot of jobs from home. Transcription, call center, web marketing, writing, and scoping are just the beginning. But if you work from home, you know how distracting daily life can be. You need to learn how to rise above the distractions to be a successful at home worker. These are five tips that will help you become more increase your productivity.

#1. Make your own office with a door. You will need to shut people out of your world when you need to meet a deadline. You will need to get away from screaming kids and the phone while you work. This is especially important if you run a call center from your home. No one wants to call for help and not be able to be heard because your child is taking your attention away from your job.

Some potential clients will not contract a job to you if you do not have your own home office with a door. This is especially important if you are handling any confidential information. Jobs where you will be handling people's names, addresses, or any medical information make it a must for your own office space with a door.

#2. Only check email a couple times per day. It can be very exciting to see who will email you. Will you get more work? Have they accepted you article? These seem like legitimate reasons to check your email, but checking your email too much will take away productive time and might make you lose your train of thought or spark of creativity. Every time you check your email, you take precious time away from your work. Try only checking email in the morning, after lunch, and an hour before you plan on quitting work. You will be surprised how much more work you can get done.

#3. Hire a child entertainer. Sometimes you need to get work done but your kids will not leave you alone. You could send them to daycare or a babysitter but a child entertainer may be more appropriate for your family.

What is the difference from a babysitter? A babysitter is older and will have more responsibility. A babysitter will change the diapers and make meals for your child. You will not have to be around at all. You could leave if you wanted to and not worry because they are being taken care of by a responsible teenager or adult.

A child entertainer will need you to be home with them. You will change the soiled diapers and cook the food. The child entertainer will keep your child busy when you are working. You can transcribe, make phone calls, do billing, and your child will be occupied. A child entertainer is cheaper than a babysitter because they have less responsibility but you will still be able to get your work done. And isn't getting your work done the bottom line anyway?

#4. Have scheduled hours. The schedule will depend on you. You can have the same schedule everyday. This way others will always know exactly when you are working and they will not be able to disturb you. The other way is to vary your schedule around your family activities so you won't miss out on anything your child does, your spouse does, or you want to do.

The reason for having scheduled hours is two-fold. The main reason is so that others will know when they can't disturb you. They will know that they can't call you to watch their kids while they grocery shop because you are at work. They will treat you work like a job because you do. The other reason is so that you know when you work and how much work you can take on. If you have a client who wants you to do X amount of work and you will know whether or not it is possible to do it because you have scheduled the hours to do it.

#5. Don't surf the Internet. Many productive hours have been lost looking up weird blogs or can't miss sales on the Internet. The Internet has a purpose. If fact many people would not have jobs at home if it weren't for the Internet. But since most people who work at home get compensated by the amount of work done and not the hours spent doing the work, it would be that same as sitting on the couch watching soap operas all day. There is no pay in that. When you are working on an assignment, don't even bring up a web page so you won't be tempted.

With small changes in your habits, you can become more successful in your work at home efforts. You can increase the amount of money you are making hourly and spend time with your family. Isn't that what working from home is all about?
