Five Uses for Coconut Oil

Lauren D
Coconut oil has been used throughout the tropics for thousands of years. People indigenous to these areas have long seen the health benefits of this fatty oil, which is extracted from the meat of the coconut. Here, we'll explore just 5 of the many ways for which this natural emollient can be used.

Virgin coconut oil most closely resembles the purest form of the oil, and can generally be found at health food stores. Ten dollars will get you a 16 ounce tub, which should last at least 6 months.

Number 1: Hair

Coconut oil is one of a few oils that actually penetrates the hair shaft to moisturize from within the strand, rather than coating the outside of the strand like mineral oil or petrolatum, which are present in most hair moisturizers. Scoop a dime-sized amount of oil into your hand (it will be close to solid form), roll it around in your palm until it melts, then apply it to wet or dry hair for shine. You can also add a dollop of the oil to your deep conditioner before applying to wet hair. Coconut oil is also good for the scalp, adding moisture and soothing the skin, which
helps prevent dandruff.

Number 2: Skin

Coconut oil is high in saturated fat as well as fatty acids, which make it the perfect anti-aging natural moisturizer for the skin. Rub on a small amount after your daily face washing and be treated to soft, supple skin. You can apply your powder or foundation over the oil.

Coconut oil is also perfect for the skin on the rest of the body. I particularly enjoy rubbing it onto my legs after shaving. It has healing properties, as it is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial in nature.

Coconut oil is also perfect for the lips during those dry winter months. It's edible, so it can be used on the lips of small children as well as adults.

Number 3: Cooking

Coconut oil is known to improve digestion, and it also aids in the absorption of vitamins. It is much healthier than vegetable oil, but functions the same way when used for cooking.

Number 4: In the bedroom

Coconut oil is a natural remedy for vaginal dryness. It contains no harsh chemicals and will not irritate the skin. In fact, because of the healing properties inherent in the oil, it soothes small vaginal tears that are generally caused by intercourse.

Number 5: Teeth

Coconut oil stops tooth decay. It's as easy as talking 1 tsp. per day by mouth.

The health benefits of coconut oil are amazing, but there are also financial benefits. Ten dollars for 16 ounces of coconut oil versus $7 for hair product, $10 or more for a facial moisturizer, $5 for body lotion, $2 for chap stick, $4 for vegetable oil, $8 for personal lubricant, and $5 for mouthwash; $10 versus $41. The choice is clear!
