Five Ways to Avoid Teaching Your Dog Bad Habits

Mrs. Renee

So you have finally decided to get yourself a dog. Many families choose to start with puppies, but regardless of age, there are certain things you don't want your new pet to learn. Training starts with your pet when you first bring them home. Remember that if you don't want your dog to pick up bad habits than you have to avoid starting them in the first place. This means that the entire family will have to follow the same set of rules to make sure that your new dog starts off on the right foot. Below are five of the best ways to avoid teaching your dog bad habits.

No table scraps

The minute you start feeding your dog table scraps, you have already started a bad habit. Every time they see you go into the kitchen for food they will think that you are going to feed them. The same will happen when guests come to your home. Your dog may think that anyone who eats in the house is supposed to feed them and they may end up begging for food.

Set up a routine

Walking your dog at the same time each day and feeding them at the same time, will really help with your dogs temperament. This is especially important if you are going to be out of the house for most of the day. Pets thrive best when they have a strict routine that they can count on.

Lower the excitement level

Some dogs get so excited when there family comes home they jump on them, or even knock things in the home over. To help keep their welcome home greeting under control, stay calm when you first arrive home. A walk as soon as you come home will also help to lower their excitement level inside of the house.

Correct bad behavior immediately

If your dog chews on something or does anything that you do not want them to immediate correction is needed. This is especially true when you are dealing with puppies. When you are puppy training everyone in the house will need to be consistent so that you dog can learn.

Don't over pamper

If you allow you dog on the couch just once then you can expect them to get on the couch each and every time. Some even get into the habit of carrying their dog around, starting when they are puppies. If the dog gets used to this, they may bark and show signs of aggression when they are not picked up.
