Five Ways to Beat the Valentine's Day Blues

Cheryl Williams

Are you suffering from the Valentine's Day blues? For someone who is not in a relationship, Valentine's Day can be one of the most dreaded holidays of the year. If you find that you are someone who is dreading the holiday, there are steps you can take to make sure you have a rewarding day.

Some people may tell you to avoid the day altogether. That is easier said than done, especially when hearts, flowers, and cupids seem to be everywhere you go.

Avoidance is not necessary. Acceptance is. Accept where you are in your life. Just because you are not in a relationship this Valentine's Day does not mean you never have been in one or never will be again. It just means that for one particular day, you are not in a relationship. The reality of the situation is that you could meet the love of your life the day after Valentine's Day.

You are in a relationship with yourself. The most important relationship you will ever have is the relationship that you have with yourself. Until you nurture this relationship, none of your other relationships will survive. Take this time to do something nice for yourself. Get a massage. Buy yourself a bouquet of your favorite flowers. Take a bubble bath. Take a walk. Schedule a check-up. Love yourself.

Don't be a hater. Nothing can fuel the Valentine's Day blues quite like resenting those who are in a relationship. Making snide remarks, wishing gloom and doom on a couple, laughing at others' Valentine's Day plans are all a waste of time. Fueling your own bitterness will do nothing to help you fight the blues. Show genuine happiness for those who are in a relationship.

Don't be afraid to cry. It's okay to cry if you're feeling sad. Emotions are a part of who you are. Tears are healing. So if it helps to listen to sappy love songs, then do it. After you cry, toast yourself with a glass of wine in remembrance of the loving relationship that you had.

Host a Valentine's Day party for friends without partners. Just have fun. Play silly games. Play "Pin the Tail on Cupid". Make your own drinks with funny Valentine's Day names like "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" or "Achey Breakey Heart".

Beating the Valentine's Day blues does not have to be difficult. All it takes is a bit of planning and a change in the way that you think.
