Go outside and take a walk! Yes, even if it's dark and cold out there. People tend to spend a lot more time indoors than they want to during the winter season which can lead to boredom. Bundle up and take a walk, even if it's only a 15-minute walk. The fresh, cold air will make you feel invigorated and it will be good to get back into the warm environment of your home.
Start a new hobby! Part of the reason people get depressed during wintertime is from boredom, doing the same thing every day, nothing much to look forward to. Instead of sitting in your house being bored, why not consider starting a new hobby. Has making jewelry or painting wood or crocheting ever interested you? Now's a good time to give it a try. It will get you out of the house and doesn't cost a lot. Most craft stores offer craft classes during the week and on the weekends. How about joining a gym? Exercising at a gym is not as painful as it used to be. Most gyms offer some form of dance classes to get you in shape like Jazzercise or zumba. You get to listen to upbeat music, socialize, and get in shape at the same time.
Help those less fortunate than you! Why not volunteer at a retirement home? There are elderly people there who would love to have someone to talk and laugh with. This experience will probably leave you thinking that being stuck in your warm home all winter is not so bad.
Listen to your favorite music! Gone are the days of having to listen to the radio and hoping that occasionally a song will come on that you really like. We now have an invention called the I-Pod. This little invention allows us to download only the songs that we really love. So while you're stuck in your house cooking, cleaning, making out bills, doing laundry, etc., listen to your I-Pod. You'll be amazed at how listening to music you love will pick your spirits up and chase away those feelings of depression.
Take pleasure in some very simple things that you enjoy! Instead of coming home from work after dark, making some food and then plopping down on the couch to watch TV until you fall asleep, treat yourself to a simple drink that you rarely make. Maybe some peppermint tea, some raspberry hot chocolate, or chamomile tea? It doesn't have to be fancy. It just has to be a treat. And looking forward to that all day long may just help you to beat those winter blues.
