Five Ways to Make Your Bedroom Feel Bigger

Dee Jones
In the movies, it seems like everyone has large, spacious bedrooms. The bedrooms in the movies are bigger than some people's entire apartments.

It's enough to make those with small, cramped bedrooms feel envious.

The bedroom is supposed to be your place to rest and relax. But it's hard to feel relaxed if your bedroom feels cramped and claustrophobic.

Here are some things you can do to make your bedroom feel more spacious and open.

Get a New Bed

Get a bed without a headboard or footboard. This will give you valuable inches of space.

If you like to read in bed while leaning back against the headboard, there's an easy solution. Buy plenty of cushions to line up against the wall. They will act as your new headboard. And will probably be much softer and more comfortable to lean against, too.

Also, if you're getting a new bed, get one that's lower to the ground. It will make your bedroom feel more spacious.

Where to Put Your Bed

Should you put your bed against your wall, or move it away from the wall?

Moving the bed away from the wall will actually give you more wall space, meaning you'll have more places to put furniture.

But pushing the bed up against the wall will make the room feel more spacious.

Get Rid of Unnecessary Furniture

Nothing makes a room look smaller than being packed with too much furniture.

Give your bedroom a good once over. Is there any furniture that doesn't actually need to be there? Do you really need two nightstands? Do you ever actually sit in the chair over by the window?

If there's any furniture in your bedroom that you realize is unnecessary, move it to another room. Or sell it, and use the extra money to buy yourself some new bedding.

Try to make sure the furniture you do keep in your bedroom is really worth the space it takes up. For example, instead of having a small, decorative table at your bedside, get a bedside cabinet that will give you plenty of extra storage.

Get Rid of the Clutter

A bedroom filled with clutter will look smaller. Bare surfaces will make the room look more spacious.

If you have lots of books and knick-knacks lying around on your dresser or nightstand find somewhere else to put them, like in your bedside cabinet.

Get a storage bin that you can slide under your bed. That way, you'll have a place to put all of the stuff that usually takes up space on your dresser.

Can You Use Your Closet

How big is your closet? If it's pretty big, you might be able to make good use of the extra space by moving your chest of drawers (if it will fit) in there. That way, you still have a place to store things, but the chest is not taking up valuable space in your bedroom.

Having a small, cramped bedroom can make it difficult to rest and relax. But, while there's no way you can actually make your bedroom bigger, these tips will make it seem like you did.

My bedroom is small. I have a waterbed up against the wall but I really cant move it. I have this huge dresser and a smaller one because I have way to many clothes. My closet is really small so it doesnt hold that much stuff. I have a desk too, but i really dont use it. Should i get rid of the desk or one of the dressers? Or get rid of the clothes i dont wear anymore and try to make more room in the closet so I can get rid of teh big dresser?
