August 26 is National Dog Day. It was founded by the National Dog Day Foundation. The purpose of the holiday is to rescue homeless dogs and to honor dogs for all they do for us. President George W. Bush wrote a letter to the National Dog Day foundation supporting the holiday and the work that they do.
Dogs are incredible beings that serve as companions and protectors. They also serve in the military, find drugs, and find lost people. They lead the blind and can even be hearing ear dogs for people so they can known when phones are ringing or when people are at the door.
The goal of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs a year. Their motto is "Saving 10,000 Dogs - One Day at a Time."
You can celebrate National Dog Day, too. Here are five ways to celebrate National Dog Day.
Adopt a Dog
If you are thinking about getting a dog or another dog, make sure to adopt one. This can be from the local animal shelter or a local rescue organization. Don't purposely go out and buy a dog. If you already made a promise to buy a dog, make sure that it is not bought from a puppy mill and comes from a reputable breeder.
Volunteer at a Shelter or Rescue Organization
Volunteer your time at a shelter or a rescue organization. It is likely that the dogs are going to need to be fed, walked, brushed, and bathed. The only negative thing that can happen when wanting to volunteer is that the shelter can say they have too many volunteers. This is not a likely situation.
Pamper Your Pooch
If you don't already pamper your dog every day, give your dog a day to relax and be pampered. Show the dog how much you love it and care about it.
Learn About Puppy Mills
If you do not understand why puppy mills are bad, learn about them. Read what happens and find shows about these places. Oprah has even done shows about puppy mills. You can probably find these episodes in libraries. They may even be somewhere on the Internet.
Encourage Others to Adopt a Dog
If you know of a family looking for a dog or one that seems it could use a dog, encourage that family to adopt one. Make sure they know that you mean to get one from the local animal shelter or local rescue organization.
