Five Ways to Drink More Water

Katie Bouchillon
By now, everyone knows drinking water is healthy. Eight glasses a day is the recommended amount for adults. In our hyper busy lives, how can we be sure we are drinking enough? Aside from just grabbing a glass and chugging some down, there are many ways to fit water into your daily life.

First, make water a wake up habit. Keep a bottle of water next to your alarm clock. When you wake up in the morning, sit up and drink. This will help you wake up, set your tone for the day of water drinking, and jump start your eight glasses a day goal.

Second, make sure you have water on hand. Keep a bottle in your car, or your purse, or desk at work. If you buy a case of bottled water, it is easy to keep water where you will have access to it. Put a bottle in your car, your desk at work, in your bag with your workout clothes. If you prefer to only drink cold water, here's a great trick. Open the bottle and pour half into a cup or glass, and put that in the fridge. Now put the half empty bottle in the freezer. In the morning, pour the cold water in the bottle, on top of the ice. Cap the bottle and wrap it in one or two paper towels. This will keep the condensation from getting on you while you travel, and when you get ready to drink, it will still be nice and cold.

A third option is instead of a soft drink at lunch, chose water. Ask for lemon if plain water is not to your taste. The same for you afternoon break. Instead of soda and a candy bar or chips, have water with your snack.

Fourth, you can get some water from the food you eat, especially fruit. Summer is a great time to stock up on water rich fruit such as watermelon and cantaloupe. You can buy them fresh, cut them up and freeze the servings for later. On a hot day, frozen watermelon is a cool, water laden treat. Regular meals are another way to get more water. Salads, especially lettuce contain water. Soup is water based. Just changing one or two meals a week is enough to add a little bit of water to your overall consumption.

And finally, consider flavored water. The biggest complaint about water is how bland it tastes. Flavored water is another great way to make sure you are drinking all that you need. There are many flavor options at the grocery story so you can customize your water to what you like best. You can by already flavored water, or buy the powder packets that you just pour in and shake to mix.

There are many ways to add water to your daily life. Consuming eight glasses a day is easy once you consider all the options.
