Five Ways Flash Cards Help to "Green" Your Kids!

Socially Responsible Parents Want to Know!

In early 2008 when I first began to explore ways to bring the Green ABC's to kids, a variety of mediums were in front of me.

My immediate thought, however, was the medium of flash cards. It was important to me to get kids familiar with green concepts, and after immense research my decision to develop a Green ABC's Flash Card System was easy.
Some of this was because of a little bit of market research where I discovered a product known as Easy Going Green Playing Cards.

In a way, Easy Going works in the same way as The Green ABC's, but they are a deck of 56, include poems about green living and are the only product in the Easy Going Green lineup. At least it was the last time I looked early this year.

Basically, though, the use of flash cards to bring green living concepts to kids became my choice for the following five reasons.

1) Unbelievable Cash Value: For under $20.00 families, schools, churches, community groups, and any other group that wants to become accustomed to green living terms will learn the word, see the concept illustrated, and have an action step included. Best of all, you can hold it in your hand.

2) Makes Green Living Personal- each flash card is tied to a green living concept and each time a kid or family member reads it they get a chance to talk about it. We have found that subjects like R for Recycling take off when discussed in neighborhood association meetings.

3) They Travel- Flash cards are easily moved from place to place and might be just right for a cub scout meeting or your quilting bee.

4) Comfort- The true genius of flash cards is that the repetition of the words brings familiarity and when kids, families, and communities get comfortable, green living gradually just becomes normal living.

5) FUN! '" Flash cards are fun. They create excitement, discussion, imagination and community.

There are a wide variety of ways to get to know about sustainable living. The many aspects of saving our planet are infinite. That's why I enjoy it so much. But, beyond this is the need for all of us to be good stewards of a future we will not see '" our kids will inherit a rich and wonderful world if we give them the tools to do so.
