Five Ways to Be a Frugal Holiday Shopper

This is the time of the year where all the retailers are counting on bringing in a large profit. Shoppers flock to their nearest mall in search of the perfect gift. There are always so many loved ones to buy a gift for, which can make it a daunting and expensive task. There's no way around this being a little bit of a stressful time of the year if you are shopping for all the nieces and nephews or children and grandchildren, but there are definitely several ways to make your holiday shopping more budget friendly.

Five Ways to be a Frugal Holiday Shopper

1. Get a List from Everyone- The worst thing you can do is not know what the person you are buying for even wants for Christmas, or whatever holiday they may celebrate. Get in contact with them, or someone close to them, and see what they need. Some of the items on their list may be out of your price range, which is why you'll want to make sure they give you multiple options.

2. Take Advantage of Discounts- Retailers often offer some pretty healthy discounts at certain times during the holiday shopping season. If you buy during the right time, you can usually save 25% or more, which is well worth the extra effort. Those shoppers who believe that it simply doesn't matter when they buy a gift are way off base, and they will always spend more than is necessary.

3. Set a Firm Budget- I strongly recommend setting a firm budget for the holiday shopping season. If you don't set a limit, it is easy for your purchases to add up very quickly. Talk with your spouse about how much will be spent on each person on your list.

4. Purchase Only What You Came For- A general rule of frugal shopping all through the year is you must avoid impulse buying, and that is especially true during the holiday shopping season. Impulse buying seems so innocent at the time, but in the long run it adds up and can put you over your budget. Have a plan for what you are going to buy and stick to that plan.

5. Don't Wait Until the Last Minute- It is quite common for shoppers, especially men, to wait until the last minute to do their shopping during this time of the year. Why is this such a bad thing? In the end, it will end up being a bad thing for your wallet. Those who procrastinate often end up with an expensive gift that was tough to get. You'll find that you are less stressed, and you have more money when you start preparing earlier.
