Five Ways to Make Your Home Safer

Home Safety Tips

Don't sit back and wait until a burglar strikes. There are quite a few things that the average home owner can do to make their home safe and much harder for a burglar or spur of the moment thief to gain entry. Most of the ideas are common sense and easy to accomplish. Here are five ways to make your home safer.

Install Outdoor Lighting
The bad guy loves the dark. Darkness hides their crime and makes it easy for them to remain undiscovered until it is too late to take any action against them. Flood lights and other bright lights around the outside of your home should deter any burglar. And make sure that the entry ways and the driveway are filled with bright flood lights also.

Deadbolts
Burglars love homes with the skimpy locks that are easy to break. If your home lock can easily open with a jiggle or slip of a plastic card then it is time to upgrade that lock. Never skimp on entrance way locks to the home. Make sure to buy the best deadbolt lock that you can afford. Deadbolt locks are harder to open by intruders. And an intruder is certainly not going to hang around more than a minute fiddling with a deadbolt lock trying to gain entry.

Barking Dog
A dog that barks at the sound of an intruder is worth their weight in gold. If you don't own a dog, at least place a large sign in the front window or yard that says something like "Beware of Dog." Burglars don't like dogs and might skip your home.

Alarms
Alarms are not that expensive. This could be a DIY project. Go to your local hardware store and pick up several motion detector alarms. Place motion detectors around the perimeter of your home to warn you if intruders are nearby. There are several types of motion detectors on the market. Some with a loud piercing sound and those with ta loud piercing sound plus bright flood lights.

Heavy Doors
Buy the best entry door that you can afford. Every entry door to the home should be a solid core door with a deadbolt attached. This type of door is hard to kick in by an intruder.
