Mrs. Renee
Even though there have been claims that the unemployment numbers are getting better, many older workers are still struggling to find work. The key is to focus on keeping your skills sharp as you get older. Even if you went to college, and have a four year degree it is important to keep learning, and your skills need to stay sharp. Below are five ways that you can keep your skills sharp, and make sure that you are still a person in demand in the workforce.

Learning never ends

If your company offers classes that they will either reimburse you for, or pay a portion of, take advantage of it. Each year you can learn a new skill or brush up on old ones. Computers and programs are constantly being updated and changed. If this is in your field it is import to stay up to date. Be sure to take the time to update your resume every year after taking any additional courses. This way when you apply for a new position, or you are looking to switch companies your resume will be ready to go.

Freelance on the side

Some even take on freelancing jobs hat they can do on the weekends and in the evenings. If you have a hobby this may be easily turned into a fun freelance job, that will give you experience in a different field. This way if you ever choose to switch careers it will be easy to do.

Learn a foreign language

More and more companies are finding that those who speak multiple languages are actually assets to their business. So perhaps in your spare time, you can try learning a new language. You may want to speak with your employer to see what foreign language the company needs their employees to speak. Or you can pick a language that is of interest to you.

Brush up on your web technology skills

Let's face it, technology is finding its way into every company. Social networking sites are being used by many companies to help promote their business. Learning how to use the web and being able to navigate your way around the internet can make you an asset to your employer.

Join a professional organization

Sometimes finding a job is really all about the contacts that you make. By taking the time to join a professional organization, you will be making the right contacts. Also being a part of these organizations may even help you to put some of your professional skills to use.
