Five Ways to Maintain a Healthy Diet While Eating Out

Nathan R. Hale
When you're dieting or trying to develop better eating habits, it can be difficult to stay faithful to your goals when you go out to eat. As someone who is currently trying to change his eating lifestyle, sometimes I have just opted out of going to a restaurant because it becomes so frustrating! Here are some ideas I've picked up in my journey that will help you have an enjoyable experience, but still make smart food choices.

If at all possible, go with someone else with similar goals. It's always easier to resist the temptation to get fatty foods when you're with another person that's also wanting to make healthy choices. Accountability is a great tool for maintaining discipline.

Consider sharing a plate of food, since most portions in todays restaurants are literally out of control. If you can't share, order a lunch portion and don't eat the whole thing. Instead, eat slowly and stop when you're full. Take the rest home in a to-go box for another meal.

Be very conservative when it comes to bread, chips and salsa, and other high-carb appetizers. I remember stuffing myself on bread and chips, and then eating an entire dinner portion of food! Now, I limit myself to say, 5 chips or one piece of bread. If that seems impossible, ask the waiter or waitress to just bring you your drink and no appetizer, or opt for a fresh salad with fat-free dressing instead.

Remember to eat something healthy and satisfying shortly before you go to eat. You'll always be tempted to over eat when if you arrive at the restaurant feeling hungry. Make sure you also drink plenty of water before and during your meal, which will also help you feel more full and make you less likely to stuff yourself.

Pinpoint the healthier items on the menu. Lean meats, low carbohydrates, and foods with plenty of fresh or steamed veggies are good bets for healthy choices. Avoid mayonnaise or butter, fatty cuts of meats, and dishes with a lot of bread and pasta. If you decide to go with a moderate amount of carbs, choose whole-wheat alternatives.

I truly hope these little tips and tricks will help you maintain your healthy diet, and provide you with a smart but still fulfilling experience when you choose to go to restaurant. Happy eating!
