Five Ways to Get Motivated on a Rainy Weekend

Kelly O'Neil
It is a rainy Saturday morning and for the first time in ages, you have no where that you have to be. Nothing could be better than flipping on the TV and curling up on the couch for six hours. Not to rain on your parade, but you know you should be doing laundry, paying bills, and generally catching up on those little household things that you never have time to get done. Here are five ways to get motivated and get a few things done, without expending too much of your energy.

First things first! Get out of bed take a shower and get dressed. Even if you just put on some clean comfy sweats, it is easier to get going if you are out of your flannel pajamas. Drink some water. Turn on all the lights in the house. Sure it will up your electricity bill a tiny bit, but a bright sunny home is so motivating especially when it is dreary outside.

Second, get your machines running. Load and start the washer, dryer, and dishwasher. Even if all you do all day is load your machines, run them, and put the clean clothes and dishes away (with lots of couch breaks in between), you will have accomplished something, and you'll have something to wear on Monday morning.

Third, head outside. In one fell swoop (yes, I know you don't want to go outside, but the rain will definitely wake you up), get all of the trash and recycling out and head to the mailbox.

Fourth, sort out your mail. Toss the junk. Gather up your bills, pay them, and balance your check book. If you feel really adventurous, walk your bills back to the mail box (if you still use snail mail). If you're like me, and do not want to brave the elements again, put them neatly together, and be sure to send them out Monday.

Walk through the living areas of your house with a large bin or laundry basket. Gather any clutter. If you don't feel like sorting it out, just put it out of sight, and go through it when you feel more motivated. Fluff the couch cushions, fold any throws, lightly dust for a few minutes, and spray some air freshener. A few minutes of cleaning can have a huge effect on your home and your outlook.

Sometimes it is hard to get motivated. A lazy day can be good for you, but if you do these five fast and lazy little things, you'll have set yourself up for a great week, and fill a little better about the TV time. And you have definitely earned a cup of tea and a break.
