Do the work early. As soon as you know that you have an important thing to do get started. This is especially important if you know what has to be done is something you are not looking forward to doing. Sometimes starting early can relieve some of the stress that would come from putting a job off later. Usually the longer you put it off the more stressful it will become. Learn to get started early regardless of how stressful it will be.
Take small breaks while doing your work. Learn to take breaks while your working. Even just a small break can bring you back to your work with more energy and stamina to keep working. A break every 2-3 hours is usually a good idea when doing a long term job. Combine this with starting early and you are producing a recipe for success with your job.
Reward yourself for completing the tasks. Motivation can be a powerful tool. When you know that you are working towards a certain goal it will usually make you work that much harder. Set a reward for yourself for completing a task. This doesn't have to be expensive. If you are working on a paper or studying for an exam, reward yourself by watching some TV or a movie when you finish. Give yourself a night out to eat or spend some time with loved ones. Whatever you do decide on your reward before you start your work. This will keep you from putting the job off and staying focused on your tasks.
Eliminate distractions. Decide what things are holding you back. What is preventing you from getting your job done. If the television or radio is going, it may be hard to focus on that test or paper you are working on. If the telephone is constantly ringing, turn it off. You have to set yourself up with an environment that will cause you to win.
Procrastination is not an easy thing to overcome. However with some hard work and planning you can avoid putting things off. Keep yourself motivated and get start early. Avoid the stress that comes when you wait until the last minute.
