Five Ways to Safely Self Medicate Depression

Sean Meehan
Have you been feeling a little down lately? If you feel like you've been down for more than a week or two or start noticing other things are off like appetite, sleep and interest, there might be a problem. You probably have to do something in order to fix that problem. Here are five steps you can take in order to start this process.

1. Think about what you've been eating lately. Try keeping some things that are better for you around the house, like high protein snacks, or maybe carry them with you when you leave the house. If you have a lot of things to eat with you wherever you go, it takes pressure off of yourself to eat a full meal at a given time. Then you can just have a snack every you need one. Eating more infrequent meals throughout the day can actually be healthier for you than eating three full meals, as long as the snacks that you eat are healthy. If eating too much becomes a problem for you then you need to establish a point in your day when you will stop. Over time, it will get easier for you to do exactly that and not eat after a specific time

2. Diet supplements are another way that can get your life back on track. You might need pharmaceutical medication, but there's some other things you can do before getting to that step. At the very least, take a food-based vitamin and or maybe some fish oil to start.

3. Find someone who you can talk to. You might need to look at finding a counselor or someone you can talk to. Talking to someone about your life gives you feedback on a variety of different perspectives. Friends can be great in certain situations, the professional counselor will be much more objective. They won't just tell you what you need to hear, they will tell you what they feel about the situation.

4. If you exercise more and get more cardiovascular workouts, you will start to feel better also. Cardiovascular exercise several times a week, maybe 45 minutes each day, is a great way to bring up your mood and release endorphins . Endorphins are like the brain's happy-receptors; they will definitely make you feel worlds better.

5. Try some other natural self-medication options. Make a list of things you do you enjoy doing, and try to do each one of these things everyday. Before you know it, you will be living an infinitely happier lifestyle!
